What is the history? History refers to both objective historical facts and the history knowledgenarrating the historical facts. Because of the variety of historical facts, it is impossible to useany one form to neatly describe and narrate them. We can only adopt the method of“neglecting the small events and reserving the great events; describing the great events indetail and clarifying the small events in general” to record history. Therefore, the record andunderstanding of history should be continuously developed.Wushu has a long history. Since the middle of the19th century, Wushu began thedevelopment of modernization by the shock of Western culture. But it seems so far that thereis not a developed path accepted by the most people. People pay more attention to the issuessuch as “What are the effects brought by the input of western culture on Wushu modernization? How does the traditional culture affect the development of Wushu? How do we achieve therevival and prosperity of Wushu under the trend of global integration?”The dissertation studies on the development of Wushu in modern times by documentationmethod、comparison method、expert interview、combination of dialectical materialism andhistorical materialism. Following conclusions:By deliberately “bring understanding” of Charles Darwin’s biological evolution, Yan Fu’sSocial Darwinism, i.e. selected by natural and the fittest survived, deeply shocks the wholecountry and let people feel the huge pressure of survival. In order to survive, people must uniteand comply with the development of the social change. Under this kind of thought, on the onehand, the individual Wushu person, e.g. Ma Liang, changed the Wushu form to meet the needof social development; on the other hand, people who are dedicated to Wushu created a few ofWushu organizations and unite more people.“Bring understanding” to evolutionary idea hasprovided experience to Wushu and sowed the seeds of problems of Wushu. The core of modern nationalism in the West is that the country’s aim is in service civil. ButChinese nationalism keeps the focus on the country, namely, the individual must give upeverything for national interests. Under the influence of nationalist ideology, Wushu has beenchanging the traditional teaching patterns into school teaching; following the example ofWestern sports, has been developing the clear and “fair play” Wushu match; has beenpromoting the internationalization of martial arts. However, all of the practices have theinfluences on the teaching and development of Wushu. At the same time, we should be clearunderstanding of the relationship between national and international: manifestation ofnationalism pay no attention to the national forms, on the contrary, it pay more attention to thepursuit of common human spirit and value.Modern Western science is a kind of Special and local culture, it is not a kind of universalculture. But when it is promoted by the Western force, and in the form of the mathematicalexperiments, modern Chinese has come to accept it foot by foot. In the development of Wushu, people consciously adopt the principle of quantization, make Wushu actions in quantitativemanagement; people widely adopted the laboratory experiments, carried out a variety ofexperiments on Wushu, in order to verify the experiment designer’s assumptions; add a largenumber of Western academic subjects to Wushu’s teaching, training and research. Peoplewho are concerned about Wushu make efforts to promote the Wushu development, byunderstanding science in Chinese view. Whether all of the efforts are identical to Wushuculture, also need time to prove it. Under the strong impact of Western culture, people have a considerable doubt on Chinesetraditional culture, which affects on the awareness and understanding of martial arts: payingless attention to the hard detailed account of Wushu techniques and their effect on thedevelopment of Wushu; deviated from understanding of the rationality of Wushu techniques;taking gymnastics as the model, paying less attention to the differences between Wushu andgymnastics and causing some perplexity and confusion for Wushu studies.
