In the early Tang Dynasty, regular script inherited the legacy of the former Sui Dynasty, and it was a masterpiece of calligraphy styles in the North and South, showing the peak of the development of regular script art in the Tang Dynasty. As a high-grade epitaph group in the early Tang Dynasty,Zhaoling epitaph is a typical example of regular script in the early Tang Dynasty.Compared with the inscriptions in Shanxi and other places, the inscriptions in Zhaoling,a suburb of Xi’an,can comprehensively reflect the true face of the regular script style in Tang Dynasty from Zhenguan to Kaiyuan period.By combing the development background of Zhaoling’s epitaph, this paper explores the reasons why Zhaoling’s epitaph reflects the mainstream calligraphy style in the early Tang Dynasty from three aspects: the geographical distribution of calligraphers, the regional core, quantity and time span of Zhaoling’s epitaph. This paper analyzes the characteristics of the calligraphy style and the source of the inscriptions on Zhaoling regular script, which can be roughly divided into three categories: the first category is the direct inheritance of the styles of Sui Dynasty regular script and Ouyang Xun Yu Shinan’s regular script; The second category is the new style in the early Tang Dynasty that shows the meaning of running script; The third category is the rhyme of the Northern Dynasties inscriptions with rich brushwork and broad structure. This paper discusses the influence of Zhaoling’s regular script epitaph, explains the integration of quality and elegance in Zhaoling’s epitaph and the expression of calligraphy style, and understands the evolution of regular script style from the early Tang Dynasty to the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Finally,it is extended to the inspiration and thinking of Zhaoling epitaph on its own creation,so as to guide the creation of current regular script works.
