This dissertation conducts in-depth study of The Green Hills---the Mongolian Writer Buhdelger’s novel.Buhdelger (1944--) is a famous contemporary Mongolian writer. His works include poetry, prose, fictions, essays and reviews. As his masterpiece, The Green Hills represents the contemporary Mongolian novel writing. With the length of900,000words, it consists of two parts and is foil of native-soil color. The novel deals with two major themes--the "Cultural Revolution" and the "Reform and Opening" on the Horqin grassland. From the literary perspective, it involves "The Trauma Literature","The Reform Literature","Ecological Literature" and "The Native-soil Literature". It is a panorama of life, historical change, folk customs and environment in Horqin region. The writer applies local language and other writing modes in his novel and highly promotes the process of Mongolian novel writing.Based on the previous research, this dissertation utilizes literary and linguistic theories to conduct in-depth and detailed study on The Green Hills. It attempts to explore the writer’s contribution to the artistic features of the Mongolian novel writing from the perspective of theme, characterization, language and structure.This dissertation consists of introduction, body section and conclusion. The body section is composed of four chapters.Introduction mainly introduces the writer and his work--The Green Hills. It also elaborates the previous research, the purpose and the significance of the selected topic as well as research theories and methodology.The first chapter discusses the theme of the novel. It consists of three sections. Section one reflects the hometown complex of the characters. Section two compares the theme of the"trauma" with new life and gives the reflection of it. Section three analyses the destruction of ecological consciousness and environment and its effect on local life. From the perspective of "Native-soil Literature","Trauma Literature","Reform literature" and "Ecological Literature", this chapter focuses on the content of the novel. Chapter Two consists of two sections. Section One analyzes different levels of characters. In this novel Jobholang belongs to the highest level and under it are some typical characters of different ages. Section Two analyzes Buhdelger’s writing techniques. He employs direct narrative method, the indirect narration and typical dialogues to demonstrate the protagonists.The third chapter conducts a detailed study on local language style. The language in Horqin region is of strong local characteristics. Based on standard Mongolian language, the writer draws the essence of the local dialect in his writing. The first section mainly explores the language features and unique narrative style of the novel. It discusses unique Horchin dialect, local idioms and proverbs as well as the elements of Chinese language in standard Mongolian language and dialect. The second section mainly analyzes narrative style of the writer. He adds the elements of folk songs and story telling (Haolaibao) to his novel to enrich the image of the characters and promotes the narrative technique.Chapter Four deals with the structure of the novel. With the length of900,000words, this novel is divided into two parts. Its structure and layouts make the work compact and rigorous. It consists of two sections. Section one focuses on the techniques of organization. The writer employs flashback to organize story and narration interspersed with flashbacks to introduce the background. Main line and vice line are applied to structure the stoiy. Section Two analyzes the artistic writing style of the writer. By exploring the specific scenes, stories and characters, the thesis concludes that the novelist employs multi-fold writing techniques such as realism, symbolism, stream of consciousness and magic realism in his writing.The Conclusion section summaries the main points of this dissertation.
