Xing Fuyi’s Grammar Research And His Three-Dimensional Academic Thought From Sinological Angel

This doctoral dissertation "Xing Fuyi’s grammar research and his three-dimensional academic thought from sinological angel" is mainly studying Mr. Xing’s fine series of articles, which have been published on Guangming Daily, so Mr. Xing’s three-dimensional academic thought can be thoroughly concluded and explained.There’re three reasons for the choice of this theme.Firstly, Mr. Xing has published489articles, which included29ones on "Study of the Chinese Language",19ones on Guangming Daily. And he has edited51books, including21scholarly monographs. The Discovery of Grammar Problems, Chinese Grammar, The Study on Chinese Multiple Sentences have won the first prize for outstanding achievements in the humanities and Social Sciences in Colleges and universities in China. Since Mr. Xing’s articles are long pages with large amount of information, and the author knowledge and ability is limited, so the study is mainly from sinological perspective and using the "by slightly sees in a big way" techniques.Secondly, the articles published on Guangming Daily study grammar from sinological perspective, the representative works of Mr. Xing in his seventies, all involving the field of grammar more or less. Studying thoroughly the series of articles which was brief, precise, short and perfect, we can find how Mr. Xing do the research combining sinology with linguistics.Thirdly, the author finds that there’re three ideological dimensions founding the base of Mr. Xing’s articles, that is grammatical thought, sinological thought and imparting thought, through the thoroughly studying on12articles published on Guangming Daily and another3ones closely related to sinology.Therefore, there are3parts:Part I, Part II and Appendix.In Part Ⅰ, the author mainly interprets Mr. Xing’s12grammatical articles from sinological perspective, using literary critical way and the linguistic theory. Each critical article tries to interpret the style comprehensively and find the key to Mr. Xing’s research. Specifically, it develops from the following4aspects:the studying on clause, the discrimination on the words, the collocation rules of the structures and some dialect expressions.1)"The studying on clause" finds that Mr. Xing had different emphasis points when he did the research on minor sentence such as "Man can conquer nature","Restrain from doing something","A great man will succeed late" in his life" and "Spur with long accumulation" through the analysis of Mr. Xing’s3articles "on ’Man can conquer nature’","on ’Restrain from doing something’","the study on the clause ’A great man will succeed late’". And the first article emphasizes on the dialectical thought; the second one shows the respect on the linguistic facts and the last one mainly focuses on how to use the language in a proper way.2)"The discrimination on the word’s performance" shows that Mr. Xing uses different departing methods when do the research on the words "fire fighting","four","eight","birthday" based on the analysis of the3articles on the phrase "firefighting""on round numbers ""the diction development of the word ’birthday’". On "Fire fighting", Mr. Xing emphasizes on the introducing function of rhetorical questions. For the numbers "four" and "eight", he mainly focuses on the explaining of the cultural connotation of numbers and for the Chinese word "birthday", the imparting art is highlighted through the articles.3)"The collocation rules of the structures" shows that Mr. Xing using different ways to study the structure:x+over, more than10years, during the lifetime, before death. For x+over, the studying method is exploration. For "more than10years", the way is consistently chasing the changing of the structure. And for "during the lifetime","before death", the tri-angle "denotation-connotation-function" is fully applied.4)"Some newfangled expressions" shows that Mr. Xing studied "one+Noun""mister""female student" and "Qiqu " from different angles based on the analysis of articles like "the northern dialect expression ’one+Noun’,"the study on ’mister’ and female students","on ’Qiqu’ through the angle of ’pufanggu’". For "one+Noun ", the studying angle is literal way. For the expression "mister" and "female student", the angle involves many fields like time, space, region, culture, effect, practice. And for "Qiqu", it’s from the big triangle—"mandarin-dialect-ancient Chinese".Part II puts forwards three-dimension theory based on the study on the Part I. The author specifies Mr. Xing’s three-dimensional thought under the linguistics, sinological and imparting theory, using literal critical way. During the illustration, the author try to make the dissertation readable, reliable and practical, listing many samples of Mr. Xing’s works. And it develops from three aspects:grammatical thought, sinological thought and imparting thought.1) About Mr. Xing’s grammatical thought, the author summarizes seven grammatical theory, such as "the Theory of Clausal Pivot","clausal government","two triangles theory ","three adequacies ","verb-head, the case of noun","the brief trend of language expression, semantic compatibility","judging method by part-of-speech".2) This part is about Mr. Xing’s sinological thought. The author finds that Mr. Xing’s sinological thought combining Confucianism with Taoism based on the analysis of Mr. Xing’s12grammatical articles from sinological angle and3other articles like "the importance of the’direction’ and ’root’ of linguistics research","the soul of sinology and modern Chinese","sinology and new national studies". And his thought of Confucianism is showed by the world view of Monism and practice. The Taoism is about "Man follows nature" and converse thinking way.3) Mr. Xing’s imparting thought is illustrated in this part. Through the analysis of the four classical educational quotations "the key to academic research is the sound academic atmosphere","Practice devotedly to realize the dream"" To question is great""A harmonious relationship between the teachers and students and a great aim ", the author finds that Mr. Xing’s imparting views can be proved in both Chinese and Western educational theories and practice and should be promoted.In Mengzi. Wanzhang:"He can size up people by his simple devices (e. g. through an interview) and is so alive to the changes about him that he proves to be a good commentator on the current situation"。 The appendix is the author’s own view on Mr. Xing’s academic achievement and life through the3academic years. The author tries her best to observe, study, chase and investigate Mr. Xing’s works and his personality to get more accurate illustration about Mr. Xing’s academic thought in both parts.If Part I is the introduction of Mr. Xing’s three-dimensional academic thought, Part II is the refining illustration of his thought. And the appendix is the study of Mr. Xing academic life. Studying both on Mr. Xing’s academic thought and his life, this dissertation tries to be more reflective and harmonious.The original intention for me to write this dissertation is just based on a simple philosophy—China is in line with international norms. During this process, the voice of China should have its own position. And the research on linguistics also should listen out for more ideas in our native language and therefore we can know ourselves better.
