In the1960s, Chinese scientists Charles K. Kao demonstrated the optical fiber as awaveguide medium. Then in nineties of the20th century, optical fiber technology has beenresearched greatly. On the basis of the stability and the transmission characteristic of theoptical fiber, researchers gradually found the other application of the optical fiber-sensors.This special characteristic promote the development of optical fiber sensor in science andindustry, and develop in many fields such as construction detection, biological, medical,petrochemical industry, national defense security and other fields. Along with the trend ofminiaturization in scientific research and industrial fields, micro optical fiber sensor attractsa lot of people. In biomedical testing, for example, people want to place biosensor into theirbody in order to monitor human health on real-time. It is a high requirement for fiber opticsensor from this new type of structure demand. It requires the optical fiber sensor not onlythe high stability and durability, but also the small size and complex structure. Micro fiberoptic sensor can be used for different purpose by using laser micro-machining fabrication,which already becomes a hot spot in research. Especially, a series of high precision lasermachining technology, such as carbon dioxide laser, femtosecond laser, plasma focusedbeam, etc., would benefit the development of micro optical fiber sensor.The micro optical fiber has been developed with the direction of the demand from avariety of special field. However, there several challenge from these demand. At first, sincethe limitation of the micromachining fabrication, both the surface roughness and thecoating reflectivity would impact on the performance of the fiber sensor, which need to beresearched in advance. Secondly, the combination between fiber and chemiacal liquidwould increase the optical components and structure complexcity, and reduce the stabilityof the sensor. Thirdly, for the long period grating micro fiber sensor, the length of the sensorwould be affected by the temperature, thus the temperature cross-sensitivity would decreasethe resolution and application of the sensor. Finnaly, femtoseconds laser would demage thefiber, thus the stability and duration of the micro fiber sensor still need to be researched.Base on these backgrounds, the research of the micro fiber optic sensor is presentedand experimentally demonstrated in this paper, including:1. Studying on the micro optical fiber sensor surface fabriction technology. Thetheory model between the reflectance of the fiber end face and the Fabry-Perot interference was set up, which could describe the relationship of them accuratly.Based on this, the refractive index sensor, humidity sensor, magnetic field sensorand dispersion method were designed.2. Studying on the micro optical fiber sensor infiltration technology. The theorybetween the speed of the infiltration and the applied press was analized, and a newinfiltration device was designed. The magnetic field sensors were researched byusing this device, which possesses high sensitivity and low cos.3. Studying on the long period grating fabrication technology. A new fabrication ofphase-shifted helical long period fiber grating was developed, and the theorymodel of the phase-shifted helical long period fiber grating was built. The twistingand temperature insensitive characteristics of the phase-shifted helical long periodfiber grating were tested.4. Studying on the femtoseconds micromachining fabrication technology on opicalfiber. The responding theory between single or multiphotons was summaried.Several optical fiber magnetic sensors were fabricated with high stability andperformance.The innovation of these articles have been published in many international academicjournal, such as the Optical Letters, Optical Express, Sensors and Actuators B: Chemicaland other international journals and academic conference.
