A Study On Sport Science Discipline Development Strategy In Chinese Institutions Of Higher Learning

As an integral part of the First-level discipline in China, Sport Science is the science to study sports phenomenon and law, the carrier of sports talent training,teachers constructing, scientific research, community servicing and culture inheriting,and it is the think tank and pillar of sports development. The principal part of the sport science discipline in China is the sport science discipline in institutions of higher learning. The construction and development of sport science discipline in colleges and universities has been attracting attention of scholars. They have done many beneficial researches about it and yielded a rich harvest. In the progress of sorting out those achievements, some issues of current study condition have been found: the relative researches mainly focus on disciplinary system of sport science discipline, status and countermeasure, secondary discipline, micro-cosmos and district, while lack of the comprehensive, macroscopic, systematical studies and studies on the theory of development, especially lack of such comprehensive study on strategies to promote physical education to the high level of discipline category. For those reason, the author raises the strategic issue on the development of sport science discipline in institutions of higher learning in China. By using the research methods of literature review,questionnaires, expert interviews, statistics, system analysis, historical analysis and logical induction etc., to start with sorting out the development of sport science discipline in institutions of higher learning, current situation of the development of sport science discipline in China is investigated and the experience of sports discipline in some foreign universities is analyzed as the bases, a systematic study on the strategic position, strategic target, strategic policy, strategic task, strategic choice and layout,strategic focus, strategic steps and measures of the sport science discipline in colleges and universities in China has been done, combining with China’s national conditions and the actual condition of sport science discipline. The conclusions are as followings:First, the development of sport science discipline in China over 100 years generally experienced the following stages: from the project to the curriculum then to the beginning of specialty construction, specialty development, defeat and pause, formation of discipline, belonging to social science and discipline reconstruction, develop rapidly.The progress of project-curriculum-specialty-discipline shows its characteristics of being large from small, progressing with both successions and setbacks, and developing persistently.Second, the current situation shows the regional imbalance of the state key construction on the sport science discipline in China. The development in East China and North China are much better than in other areas. The number of academic papers on sport science discipline published in source journals such as SCI, EI, SSCI, CSSCI source journals is smaller than other disciplines. The influences of the journal which collected quotations of sports study is less impact. The bibliography has not attracted much attention. And its international influence has not reached our expectation yet.Most of the achievements on physical education are at low level of the outstanding achievement of scientific research. There is no obvious quantitative superiority;symbolic achievements with highly quality are insufficient, and the overall research level needs to be improved as well.Third, the discipline reputation of sport science discipline in Chinese institutions of higher learning is just on the general level. The most important five factors influencing the reputation, according to influence degree in a descending order, are the level of scientific research, subject status, the quality of the talents training, the talent team and the social service ability, which reflects the significant influence of the scientific research, talent training and the social service ability for the discipline reputation.Fourth, the emphases of the current sport science discipline in China are to improve the quality of the talents cultivation, academic status and strengthen the echelon building of talents, etc. Difficult points are in the gain of the high-quality academic achievements, the improvement of talents cultivation quality and the concision of the subject features, etc.That reflects the important position of the quality of the talents training and high level of research achievements in Physical EducationDiscipline Construction.Fifth, the strategic concept to the development of the sport science discipline in Chinese institutions of higher learning is: to combine together the inheritance and innovation, the talent cultivation and social demand, teaching and scientific research,discipline construction and social services, original disciplines and interdisciplinary integration, as well as a combination of doing and not doing with certain things, the combination of the domestic and international, an integration of “strengthening,supporting, changing the old and supporting the new”, and the integration of the scale,quality, structure and efficiency as well.Sixth, strategic choices to the development of sport science discipline in Chinese institutions of higher learning are: catch-up strategy, collaborative strategy,differentiation strategy, brand strategy, diversification strategy and growth pole strategy.The strategic layout is: one center, three basic points, one subject with two sides(with the discipline as main body, vigorously develop the discipline of the original group and interdisciplinary group); building three complementary characteristic discipline groups;combining in strength to create a number of advantage discipline group; fanning out from point to area, in echelon development pace, to build regional feature advantage discipline group.Seventh, the research areas prior to develop of sport science discipline in Chinese institutions of higher learning are: national fitness and sports industry. The major cross-disciplinary research fields of sport science discipline in Chinese institutions of higher learning are: the cross study between sports and engineering, medicine, culture,economics, management, law, leisure, etc.. It is necessary to strengthen the cross-disciplinary research, and enrich the discipline basic theory of sports engineering,sports and health, sports culture, sports economics, sports management, sports law and leisure sports constantly, and enhance their social influence.Eighth, the development strategic measures of sport science discipline in Chinese institutions of higher learning are: clearing the standardization construction theory of sport science discipline, reconstructing of disciplinary system, optimizing subsidy policies to increase funding efforts, strengthening the talent team construction,promoting the combination of study in different disciplines, developing collaboration and cooperation among different channels, creating international academic cooperation and communications, establishing and improving the “infrastructure” to build platform for academic research, combining the discipline with technical subjects and encouraging collaborative innovation, strengthening the application of research to improve the degree of the research outcomes’ transformation, promoting positively the process of hierarchical and systematic construction of physical education curriculum system.
