There are no questions about cross-border ethnics and modern national identity before modern ethnic countries appear. The boundary lines divide the identical people into different countries and they, in turn, formulate some special geographical patterns like "one dam under two countries, one village under two countries and one family under two countries." Due to the boundary lines, people who have an identical culture and character will inevitably suffer from ambiguous national identity. However, as a fundamental type of national consciousness and a link that is essential to the existence and development of a nation, national identity provides ideological assurance for the stability, uniqueness and consistency of a nation as a community and therefore directly contributes to the stableness and evolvement of a multi-ethnic nation. It has been proved by psychological research that middle school time is the critical period for the shaping of national identity. Middle school students are malleable group of citizens who are experiencing maturation. It is a requisite concern for the prospect and fate of our nation to investigate into the development of the national identity of middle school students.In order to analyze the national identity of middle schools in cross-border ethnic area in Dehong autonomous prefecture, this research adopts questionnaire investigation, intensive interview and field observation. And the research reveals:(1) the national identity of middle schools in this area is low;(2) the national identity of middle schools will decrease as students grow;(3) among the factors which affect the national identity of middle school, family, school and society have a significant and positive correlation with it;(4) as for family factor, if their parents have a better education, students in middle schools will possess a higher national identity;(5) as for society factor, economical disparity and social matters have a negative correlation with students’national identity of middle schools in cross-border ethnic area. If the disparity between cross-border ethnic area and inland is greater, students’national identity is lower and vice versa;(6) about school factor, a better class teaching will achieve a better national identity and so will ideological education. As the founding shows, students in this area have basic national identity which is changing alternatively and dynamically. But the whole trend is that students’ ethnic consciousness of high schools in cross-border ethnic area in Dehong autonomous prefecture is increasing while their national identity is decreasing into a crisis.This research, from the perspectives of historical source, actual reason and core crux, tries to study the reasons of national identity crisis of middle school students in the region of cross-border ethnic, finds out that the relation between cross-border national identity and ethnic identity is one of key ethnic problems and that the disharmony of these two parts is the key crux of causing the national identity crisis in the cross-border ethnic region.This research introspects and criticize current theoretical mode and puts forward a new theory——perspective of harmony and syncretism in the discussion to seek the theory of national identity in the cross-border ethnic region. It accords with actual demanding in the development of harmony and syncretism because it is an effective prescription in handling the social crisis in the cross-border ethnic region, is the lubricant in solving the ethnic problem and construction of harmonious society and is compass to the integration of multi-culture and the achievement of world harmony. This research advocates the belief "seeking common points while reserving difference", subsiding conflicts in the process of defusing contradiction and realizing harmonious situation in the communication. It is the core demanding of harmony and syncretism as well as the theoretical basis and core method to dismiss the national identically crisis in the middle school students of cross-border ethnic region.It is true that there are various factors to intensify the national identity of middle school students in the cross-border ethnic region, but among these factors, education is an important approach. This research discusses the approaches to strengthen the national identity of these students in the realm of harmony and syncretism. We try to clarify the inner relation among cross-border ethnic people, education of national identity and philosophy of harmony and syncretism. Next one is to survey and to examine historical and current experience and the current problems in the education of national identity in the cross-border ethnic region. Lastly, under the reflection of harmony and syncretism, we try to pertinently come up with some strategies and relating guarantee system. To sum up, we arrive at the following conclusions:for the sake of obtaining practical achievement in the education of national identity for these students and the harmonious and syncretic development of education of national identity, the relation between education of school, family and society have to be well dealt with and three-dimension of educational system concerning school, family and society have to be constructed. The realization of educational strategy demands the guarantee of concept, expenditure, system, policy and law, etc. Among these, educational laws are the most powerful one. Law guarantee that is capable of handling the national identity of school students is a huge system project, which requires reasonable guides, standards, scientific guarantee. of expenditure and formulation of policy system and complete law system.
