Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is a landmark project in Chinese history. Since ancient times, the Grand Canal are of high value in all aspects of cultural, social and economic. Grand Canal across six provinces from north to south and connects five major rivers. Development of the Grand Canal began in Hangou that built in the fifth century BC. Grand Canal has nearly two thousand five hundred years of history. For thousands of years, China’s ancient Grand Canal has been a significant "water transport channel" and the political and economic lifeline. This ancient waterway passage has played a very important role in national unity, economic prosperity, cultural integration and international exchanges. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was selected as the "World Heritage List" in the 38th World Heritage Conference in June 22,2014. It shows the great value and uniqueness of the Grand Canal. But it should be a clear understanding that declared World Heritage Heritage is not the purpose, but just a way to protection. We should take practical measures to protect the cultural heritage of the world are important to restore its vitality.South-North Water Transfer Project is a major strategic decision to solve our water shortage problems of the north. The water diversion project have three water routes those are East Water Route, Middle Water Route and West Water Route. Eastern Engineering uses the Grand Canal and the river parallel with it as a main water line. The Eastern Engineering can be considered as a large-scale repair to the Grand Canal.That is also having a significant impact on Cultural Landscape Heritage Protection of the Grand Canal. This brings opportunities and challenges to protect the integrity of the Grand Canal.First, based on the theoretical and practical background to analyze the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal development history and Value Changes. Clearly Grand Canal played an important role in the history of the Grand Canal in the political, economic and cultural aspects. Grand Canal has important cultural and technical value in today’s society. And it has value as a regional ecological infrastructure, the important tourism resources from north to south, the important shipping channels and as a water diversion water line. On this basis, analysis on current situation of Grand Canal cultural landscape heritage, the problems of protection and utilization. These include rivers drying, environmental pollution, the serious damage along the canal and improper protection of cultural heritage, the protection regulations and management mechanism is not perfect.Secondly, based on the implementation status of North Water Transfer Project, comparing the space, time, function, management between the Grand Canal and the water diversion project. The construction combines with the cultural heritage protection. We should deal with the challenges brought by the water diversion project and the proposed policy challenges into opportunities.Finally, the values of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal are diversed in today’s society. Current situation and protection of the Grand Canal is complex. By comparison with the related international heritage protection, Grand Canal of protection should learn from the experience of other, countries related to protection. North Water Transfer Project should be used as an opportunity to Grand Canal of protection. Based on the characteristics of the Grand Canal, coordinated the demands of natural, economic, and cultural, construction of the overall protection system of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
