Study Of The Construction “Negative + Interrogative + X” In Modern Chinese

Negatives and interrogatives are very common categories in Modern Chinese, there are many studies in the field, but almost nobody researched before on the construction of "negatives+ interrogatives + X". Based on the theory of cognitive linguistics, actually construction grammar, this paper focuses on some constructions which are the subtypes of the construction of "negatives+ interrogatives + X". We first reviewthe previous studies on non-interrogative usage of the interrogatives, and then ascertain the scope of the study.This dissertationconsists of ten chapters.The first chapter is an introduction and review ofthe results of previous studies on the related issues.The second chapter analyses the construction of "negative+interrogative +X" and breaks it down into the chunks. The statistic analysis of the negative and interrogative combinations is done, and the general meaning of the construction is analysed.The third chapter analyses the construction of "negative +shui(谁)+ X". It reveals the syntactic and semantic characteristics of the construction, and analyzes the relationships between the construction of "negative + shui( 谁) + X" and some other relevant constructions.The fourth chapter is the analysis of the construction of "negative + shenme(什么) +X".The chunk of “X” in the construction and the usage of the construction are described.And the constructional meaning is analysed.The fifth chapter is the analysis of the construction of "negative + na(哪)+ X", discussing the relationship between "na( 哪) " and the chunk of "X", and indicating its syntacticcharacteristics and constructional meaning.The sixth chapter is the analysis of the construction of "negative + ji(几)/duoshao(多少)+ X". This chapter analyses the syntactic characteristics of the construction and the chunk of “X” in it, anddiscusses the constructional meaning of "negative + ji(几)/duoshao(多少)+ X".The seventh chapter is the analysis of the construction of "negatives + zenme(怎么)+ X".It discussesthe syntactic characteristics of the construction and the “X” in it, and explainsthe constructional meaning of"negatives + zenme(怎么) + X".The eighth chapter is the analysis of the construction of "negatives + zenmeyang(怎么样)”. It compares this construction with some other relevant expressions, and analyses the constructionalmeaning of "negatives + zenmeyang(怎么样)”.The ninth chapter analyses the syntactic chanracteristics of the construction "negative +weishenme(为什么)", in addition to revealing its constructional meaning, this chapter also discusses its tendency of lexicalization.The tenth chapter is the conclusion.
