This project is a study about the monument complex in the background of former Soviet Union’s transformation period. The design of the monument complex of Bow Hill in Moscow lasted for nearly 50 years(1943-1995). Its construction began in the mid-1980 s, during which period the former Soviet Union started to reform and finally disintegrated with the result that the design underwent a series of unpredictable changes. This article aims to restore this historical fact with a detailed research of the change process of the design and construction from 1985 to 1995. In addition, this article gives an analysis about the relation between the Russian memorial art and traditional culture.The first part centers around the relation between social transformation and memorial art in the light of sociology and, on this basis, discusses several conceptions during this period such as memory and memorial, nation identification, ideology, and their inter-impact and correlation. It aims to reveal the relation between art and society under certain circumstances, which is a necessary theoretical basis for studying the Russian memorial art during the transformation period.The case study is just a partial problem of the whole Russian society, therefore,the study of the memorial art and society should also include the important monuments. This article contains a research about some important monuments recently built and some artists, through which we can obtain a more direct and overall understanding of the cultural features during the transformation period.Memorial art is a memory and display of noble human spirit and a philosophical meditation of life and its value. The discussion about the design and construction of victory monument is bound to clarify such a life value. The last part deals with such issues as public decision, elite decision, space and right, the eternity of memorial art,which actually are the significance and value of this study.
