A Cognitive Study On Verb Copying Sentence In Modern Chinese

Verb copying sentence in modern Chinese is a special kind of sentence pattern, has been the focus of linguistics.Research on it is also very rich. Overview of previous research on the verb copying sentence,we can find following points.Domestic scholars focus on the research scope of the verb copying sentence, the classification of verb-copying sentence, the cause of using verb copying sentence, the transformation of verb copying sentence with the sentences which have the same meaning; foreign scholars focus on information expression of verb copying sentences. We found that the specific and comprehensive study is still relatively rare on the verb copying sentence from the cognitive perspective. According to cognitive linguistics theories including figure-ground theory,the iconicity theory, image schema theory, "bounded-unbounded"theory, construction grammar theory, subjective theory and so on,we try to make a comprehensive cognitive study on the verb copying sentence. The paper has eight chapters as follows:The first chapter is the introduction, briefly expounds the reason of choosing this topic, introduces the research meaning of the verb copying sentence, as well as the research scope, research orientation and the specific research framework.The second chapter is the research summary. In this chapter, we mainly reviewed the research results of the verb copying sentence, we summarize the verb copying sentence research from three aspects, First is the name of the verb copying sentence, the scope of the research, second is the classification, the third is multi angles study of the verb copying sentence and so on. Through the research, we found the existing problems in the study of verb sentence:there is a lack of research on the comprehensive cognitive study on the verb copying sentence, which is the direction of this paper.The third chapter is the cognitive analysis of the verb copying sentence. We believe that the verb copying sentence includes the performance of the figure and background, and combined with the theory of iconicity, we analyze of the iconicity characteristics of the verb copying sentence.In general, the verb copying sentence is a process-result of image schema, using sequential scanning way to describe events.The fourth chapter is the boundary feature of the verb copying sentence. We use "bounded-unbounded"theory to reanalyze the verb copying sentence. VP1 is a unbounded phrase, VP2 is a bounded phrase, VP1 express background information in the sentence because of its unbounded characteristics, while the VP2 express figure information in the sentence because of its boundeded characteristics. VP2 is the focus of the sentence.The fifth chapter is the analysis of verb copying constructure network.According to the construction grammar thoery, the verb copying sentence is considered as a construction. We think the central meaning of the verb copying construction is "cause".It is found that the verb copying construction has four surface in the form:SVOVC(le),SVOVdeC,SVOVdaoC,and SVOVleC.The SVOVdeC form has the highest frequency of use. It is the prototype of verb copying construction,and the other three are the derivative forms,they compose the semantic network.The sixth chapter is the subjective characteristics of the verb copying sentence. The verb copying sentence has certain subjectivity.According to the characteristics, pluggable components, prospective, the expected amount of perspective,we reveal that unexpected feature is the important feature of the verb copying sentence. The verb copying sentence can express extra-expected information and under-expected information.The seventh chapter is the pragmatic function of the verb copying sentence. We use discourse study of the verb copying sentence, summarize the discourse function of the verb copying sentence, the verb copying sentence tends to appear in the text of the causal relationship. Then we explore the pragmatic function of verb copying sentence, the verb copying sentence has the significance of self-sufficiency, and has explained the function. Finally, we compare with other related constructions, emphasize the unique function of the verb copying sentence:describing the process of the action and emphasizing the result.The eighth chapter is the conclusion, summarizes the paper, points out the problems related to the lack of research and further research.
