Study On Practical Statecraft Thought Around The Opium War

Humanistic pragmatism sprung up around the Opium War. It had a revolutionary effect on the conception of history, ethics, politics, economics and the traditional thoughts, which began the modern times of China’s society, ideology and culture This dissertation which includes six chapters except the introduction and the conclusion focus on the Humanistic pragmatism.The first chapter is a summary of Humanistic pragmatism history which briefly contains the development of Humanistic pragmatism and some main figures and their thoughts. On the base of this, this dissertation summarized the contents and the features of the Humanistic pragmatism.The second chapter mainly focuses on the context of the Humanistic pragmatism before and after the Opium War. This chapter briefly analyzes the social and national crisis in China during that period of time and the ban on opium-smoking and the opium trade and the firm attitude of resisting the aggression of the statecraft thinkers and the officials as well as their statecraft thoughts.The third chapter illustrates the concept of history of WeiYuan and GongZizhen who represented the Humanistic pragmatism and analyzes the SanShi and the changing history on the bases of which explores the historical rules of the practical and convenience for the common people and the historical cause for the theory of heart.The fourth chapter analyzes the value revolution from the perspective of the relationship of public and private, that of benefits and righteousness, the liberation of the individuals and their personality and the introduction of the western ideas to reveal its effect on the transition of Chinese value.The fifth chapter discusses the contents and the basic features of the Humanistic pragmatism politics thoughts, furthermore reveals its effect on the modern politics revolution and its contemporary value.The sixth chapter analyzes the economic solution to solve the polarization between the rich and the poor by the Humanistic pragmatism from the perspective of the damage to the society and caused by the opium smuggling,the practical measures in water transport, salt administration, currency system revolution, industrial and commercial development and limitary industry and the complex features of its economics thoughts.
