| “In term of the native places of the writers, the long novel writers from Henan province have moreconsiderable strength than others.” Absolutely, the writers from Henan province have done much betterthan others in term of the quantity of long novels and creative enthusiasm since1949. Especially, thewriters from Henan province have grown rapidly since1990s. They also have done great jobs ofpersistence and breakthrough in the field of creating the long novels. The Henan novel writers had created139long novels which represented special spirits and views from1949to1999. This thesis makes adetailed analysis of novels and data. The essay hackles the basic status of Henan long novels from1950s to1990s and has a representative of each period works on case analysis, finding the characteristic of Henanlong novels and the existed problem. The essay also summarizes some features and laws associated withthe Central Plains region. In the thesis, the writer insists in using the method of novels analysis and datapresentation. The writer makes great efforts to return to the original history of the Henan long novel’sbackground. The pursuit of the thesis is “based on history”.During the research, the writer tries to avoid the antecedent intervention of the concept. The writeralso tries to avoid using the materials selection mode with the purpose of strengthening of the view. Thewriter makes a great effort to figure out the problems and finds solutions to solve them by reading thesenovels. On this basis, I capture a moment of transition of Shituo’s long novel “turning point ofhistory” which was published in early years of the new nation and the tendency of writing of Li Zhun’slong novel “the Yellow River to the East” in the new political background. From the above series of worksand the case of “reduction” basis, two narrative features of Henan Novels:“political writing” and “localnarrative” appears gradually.The first part is the first chapter, divided into three sections respectively, the three period (50--70years,80’s,90’s) and general situation of Henan Novels.Although the publication number of Henan novels created from50s to70s, is not too much, but, theyhave made a great influence and achievement. Henan writers spare no effort with literary practice and therationality of policy, interpreting the legitimacy of the party under the leadership of the revolution. YaoXueyin, Wei Wei, Liu Zhixia, Su Ying have made remarkable achievements. The Korean War, theagricultural cooperation, the steel and other social and political movement in the novels were obtainedrapid reflection. Compared with the most fifty’s long history,“History of Ruthless” is somewhat “strange”.Through the tortuous process from publishing it, we can see a special “political” demand in1950s. With therapid and development and recovery, Henan novels created in1980s are full of confused noise and fury.During this period, there were totally37long novels which were written by Henan writers. Revolutionarylegend grew from prosperity to decline, drifting further and further away. Historical novels present a splendid sight. Er YueHe’s historical novel lead trend of Henan novels. Local records, historical legends arereleased. Li Zhun in his long novel “the Yellow River East” described some “little people” by some bigevent. This method is not only saying goodbye to propaganda model but also leading the new trend of“political” in a certain sense. The seventeenth Generations of Li family written by Li Peifu deeply andpowerfully represents the Central Plains culture. The theme of local cultural instead of the theme ofrevolution which represented in fifty or sixty’s novel became the pursuit for the writers. With thedevelopment of the society, this becomes a great promotion in the field of novel creation. From1990to1999, Henan novelist had created65long novels. From1990s, with the rapid development of Chineseeconomy, Chinese people’s living standard and culture life have made a great change. The novels whichdescribe the local culture are also playing a very important role in the field of Henan novel creation. Thelong novel “Door of the Sheep” has a profound reflection of the Central Plains culture. The novel“Ringleaders” receives praises by new art form. Historical novel reached another peak. During this periodHenan writers with strong epic complex created many epic works such as the novel “chrysanthemum of ourhometown”. Compared with the local writing style, metropolis novels didn’t play a very important part, notreflecting Henan local people’s life style.From the second chapter to the sixth chapter is the second part. Based on the overall summary of thefirst part, each period were selected as representative’s detailed explanation, a total of five selected novels.The first novel is “Ruthless History” which was published in the early years of the new nation writtenby Shituo. The first novel is "the History of Ruthless" written by Shi Tuo published in1951. He adapted theshort story “the Three Nobodies” for the long novel "the History of Ruthless". This highlights the “modernwriter” stepped into an “contemporary writer”. Before this novel, Shi Tuo’s novels mostly describe the“people” and the “scenery”. After the foundation of the People’s Republic, he paid more attention to writethe “movement” and “assignment”. The long novel "the History of Ruthless" plays a very important role inShi Tuo’s works. Unique characters in the novel, the daily narrative and the strong flavor of life, all thesereflect the influence power of narrative discourse in the1950s. narrative discoursenarrative discourseThe second novel is “Li Zicheng” written by Yao Xueyin. Process of revolution leading by Li Zicheng wasincorporated into the concept of “history” revolution. The hero’s character in this novel is producedaccording to a predetermined route.The third novel is “The Yellow River to the East” written by Li Zhun. This novel is evolved from thenovel “A River Runs Through It”. In the novel “A River Runs Through It”, the hero Li Mai who is therepresentative of the labor. But in “The Yellow River to the East” she changed into an enthusiastic sisterhaving a strong ability. This novel has been influenced greatly by the new political environment. The long novel “The Yellow River to the East” still has the political fetters using the new forms.The forth novel is “The door of the Sheep” written by Li Peifu. In his novel, when he described thenatural scenery, he thinks more about the characteristics of the people from the central plain. In this novel,the writer successfully created the hero of Hu Tiancheng who plays a local despot role. Li Peifu makes agreat contribution to the contemporary literature. Hu Tiancheng’s personality formation have a closerelationship with unique cultural traditions of the Central Plains region.The fifth novel is Chrysanthemum of Hometown written by Liu Zhenyun. In Liu Zhenyun’s novels,hunger, famine and suffering are the main tone of the story. His novels have a great influence by LiuZhenyun’s childhood experiences. The Henan district often experienced famine. Henan people have moreradical political enthusiasm. These all lead a great disaster to Henan local people. Hungry, poor anddistortion of human nature melt into the memory of Liu Zhenyun’s childhood. From the beginning of the90’s long, he set out to explore the source of power and the essence. The ideology of hypnosis and theactual operation of the killing are the two big magic weapons of politicians. Liu Zhenyun’s uniqueness liesin his mode of expression. In a tongue of cheek manner, all politicians’ highfalutin words stripped,exposing the human pursuit of power most naked motivation.The third part is the seventh chapter. Through the investigation, the paper obtained two narrativethemes through50years development of Henan novels: one is the political writing, the other is localnarrative. Papers discussed with the characteristic of political novel writing from the nepotism and ruralethics, political wisdom, and the essence of the power in Henan novel; Vernacular narrative is a big topic.As far as I can see, this paper discusses two small problems of the Henan rural narrative, one is thecharacter image of central plains of native people.(“old crops bar “image and three kinds of”“villagegenius” image), another is the Zhongyuan people’s superior quality of “toughness”.The fourth part is the last chapter.This part is about a brief account of deficiencies of Henan novelnarrative. Found in many works, Henan writers always pay more attention to praising the wise men andpower of the central plains, liking to describe the hero who became the story of “grass”eventually in theenvironment of the hardships. They are filled with a kind of self-identity for the “strong” and “wise men”of the central plains. The author describes the imposing manner of privileged commanding in a good way.It is difficult to realize the narrator’s hatred and opposition, to realize the vulgar of power and wisdom. Thisis natural expression of the personality of Henan writers, and is a part of the Henan writer’s personalitycharacteristic as well as a potential obstacle of Henan writers creation. The cultural phenomenons of specialgeographical, cultural, historical characteristic of central plains area have a great influence on the Henanwriters writing style. |
