A Comparative Study Of Cultural Value Differences Between Cross-Strait

Mainland China and Taiwan are affected by the deepening extent of the impact of globalization and multi-cultures with Confucian culture, traditionality, management, education, and information dissemination, making cross-straits cultural value differences narrow gradually. Therefore, this research attempts to have the differences between cross-strait cultural values including power distance, individualism and collectivism, traditionality, and sympathy. The results contribute to the discovery and realizing the differences on cultural values. It is extremely important to advance the social development, and improve the interaction and communication of cross-strait.A narrative literature review was included in the first part of this dissertation. It consisted of three major parts. Part one outlined the definition, and conceptual nature of cultural value as well as the relevant theoretical perspectives. Part two reviewed the research about the function and measurement of cultural value. Part three reviewed research about the differences between cross-strait cultural values in Chinese culture. Finally, based on the part one, part two, and part three, were theoretical limitations and social situations, the main purpose of this dissertation was identified.The present researches reviewed related literature and conducted4empirical studies. Those studies verify the power distance, individualism and collectivism, traditionality, and sympathy. Those main conclusions are helping people to recognize the importance and development of cross-strait, as follows:Firstly, the differences in power distance between cross-strait undergraduates (chapter4). The research result shows that power distance of cross-strait undergraduate is the significant. However, comparing with Hofstede found out that Mainland China is the high power distance (score is80), and Taiwan is the middle power distance (score is58). In this study, we figure out the gap between Mainland China and Taiwan is getting decreasing because of the traditionality, management, education, and information dissemination. This study shows the power distance orientation in Mainland China is higher than the power distance orientation in Taiwan.Secondly, the differences between the individualism and collectivism of cross-strait undergraduates (chapter5). In the literature of western cultural background, those present cross-strait cultures are the collectivism. This study also proves the cross-strait undergraduates are the collectivism. It means they could be affected by the multi-culture impact and different affections. However, it also shows that cross-strait undergraduates have the significant differences, and the collectivism in Mainland China is higher than the collectivism in Taiwan.Thirdly, the differences between the traditionality of cross-strait undergraduates (chapter6). Based on the researches, the cross-strait traditionality are both basically from the Confusion of Chinese culture. However, the cross-strait has been separated after60years, it probably makes the differences of cross-strait in policy and the economy. This study result shows the traditionality of the cross-strait undergraduates have the non-significant. It proofs the cross-strait undergraduates with the Chinese culture tradition based on family education.Fourth, the differences between the sympathy of cross-strait undergraduates (chapter7). Because the difference of cross-strait social situation, the cross-strait undergraduates have the difference in sympathy. The result of this study is non-significant. It means there have the gap of cognition and behavior between cross-strait undergraduates because of the social situation and institutional differences.Finally, this study summarized the main findings of this dissertation.
