As one of the representative composers of modern China, Du Mingxin (1928—) has composed ballet, chamber music, symphonic music, movie and TV music and so on. His compositions develop along with the People’s Republic of China and reflect the changes and achievement of the composing business of modern China. Among various forms, symphonic music is an important part in Du Mingxin’s compositions, which intensively embodies the features, achievement and idea of his compositions and his pursuit on national style. The article means to research the symphonic music compositions of Du Mingxin, summarize their features and artistic experience embodied in them, and evaluate their historical meaning, mainly with the method of musicological analysis, in the hope of making some contribution to the development of Chinese symphonic composing business.The article includes three chapters. Chapter Ⅰ summarizes the course of Du Mingxin’s life and symphonic music compositions, which contributes to explore the experience that has influenced his symphonic music compositions. Chapter Ⅱ analyzes works of the four genres:symphony, single-chaptered symphonic music, concerto and suite. Representative works are analyzed and artistic experience in each genre is explored in this chapter. Chapter Ⅲ expatiates on lyricism, figurativeness, nationalized style and normal and precise composing conception in Du Mingxin’s symphonic music. The conclusion traces the development of style of Du Mingxin’s symphonic music compositions, analyzes the formation causes of his style, and gives an evaluation on historical value of Du Mingxin’s symphonic compositions in the perspective of modern Chinese symphonic music circle.
