This paper points out that the literature thoughts in the WenXinDiaoLong have its origin in elegant thought of Confucianism, the elegant thought begin its life in the preface of the WenXinDiaoLong and it is advanced formally in the theory of key position. As the guidance of the creation of stylistics, the core of creative techniques and the core of criticism, the elegant thought is throughout the book.In terms of origins, elegant thought originates from Confucianism, selects the doctrine of Zhu Zi of the pre-Qin Dynasty, classical studies products in Han Dynasties, significant study in Wei-Jin period. The elegant thought have the basic connotation which conclude awareness of making the Classic and the sage for cases, historical consciousness of the end and the original table, moderate beauty of aesthetic pursuit, the attitude of the "Salon" appreciation and compromised way of thinking. As for the technique of expression that it is throughout the whole book, you can see it here. The basic literary properties that articles should be formed after many changes over and over again, the pursuit of following the example of Confucianism, the present aim that we should correct the trend of corruption of words and the abusement of classics in literary creation and the inadequacies of the development of literary theory were presented in the preface of the WenXinDiaoLong. And then the elegant thought had its life. There are five chapters in the part about the core of writing. They are Yuan Dao, Zheng Sheng, Zong Jing, Zheng Wei and Bian Sao. The doctrine of literary genesis that Saints and classics are the roots of writing and the hterary essence that writing should be luxuriant and talented in literature are presented in Yuan Dao. The concept of administration and pragmatism and the four(Complicated and Simplified, Explicit and implicit, Reflect the time, Constant and Changeable)styles of writing are in Zheng Sheng. It also summarizes the classical examples that the writing of the sage people has elegant words but plain meaning. The stylistic theory that the writing is from Five Classics and the standards of creating, aesthetic and appreciating are from Six Arts. These lay a theoretical foundation for the establishment of the elegant thought. Zheng Wei and Bian Sao point out the basic characteristics that the words are splendid but not elegant in Wei-Sao and then sum up the creation principle which makes them together. Then the elegant thought gradually begins to take root in the theory of key position. In the part of discourse on styles, Mr Liu Xie uses the elegant thought as the the basic principles of all kinds of stylistic creation and makes aesthetic evaluation on ancient works and proposes a number of comments such as splendid words and elegant meanings,standard and gorgeous style. These lay a solid practical foundation for the second part of the creation theory. In the part of the analysis of the emotional tone and literary talent, Mr Liu Xie focuses primarily on the discussion of style, structure and organizationand writing techniques of the woks. He put forward a large number of special categories such as "feng gu","tong bian","ding shi","qing cai","yin xiu". Elegant thought becomes the basic core of creation techniques theory in this part. The ideas and the theories put forward by Mr Liu Xie have active meaning to this.In the next five chapters about criticism, Mr Liu Xie uses elegant thought as the core of several topics such as the theory of the history of the development of literature, the doctrine of appeal of writing contents, and the theory of the evaluation, appreciation and the criticism of the ancient writers and their works.The elegant thought that established in the WenXinDiaoLong has active meaning to the following contentious monographic studies. They are:the root and the appraisal of the eight forms of style, the connotation and keynote of "feng gu", the idea weather the " yin xiu" is style or not and the distinguish of style of writing. As for the trend tendency of literary self-eonseiousness which has exsited since Wei-Jin dynasty, Mr Liu Xie makes the explaination that we should adhere to the correct direction, emphasize on emotion and promote beauty and promote new literary change at the same time. He also criticizes the creation practice which changed a lot but lacked in idea, didn’t imitate the ancients, had the abusement of sage works in creation, had indecent idea and had a limited role. He also gives some proposals. The elegant thought doesn’t only become the basic idea that directed the creation, appreciation and criticism of the WenXinDiaoLong, but also it becomes the important theory which makes literary self-consciousness think consciously again.In the part of subject of this thesis, there are three chapters, the first chapter sets out the theoretical origin of the elegant thought. the second chapter focuses on the basic connotation and its expression of elegant thought in the Wen Xin Diao Long; The third part uses the elegant thought to solve some debates on "feng gu" The purpose of this paper is to try to establish the elegant thought in the WenXinDiaoLong and expound its theoretical value.
