The Study Of Brushstroke And Texture In Oil Painting

This thesis starts from the description of "brushstroke "and "exture", then combine them with the evolvement of oil painting so as to explain how the expressive form within brushstroke and texture effect on artwork.The first part of the thesis explores the definition of the words "brushstroke" and "texture", and retraces the history of oil painting from emerging to its maturity. Then discusses the change with brushstroke and texture based on recognition. As a result, this part proves the meaning of oil painting as the methods of representation and expression.The second part describes the factors of brushstroke and texture in the view of formalism, as well as the analyse on the limitation and the dilemma of formalism itself,indicates that oil painting should be deliberated within the context of the relationship among nature,artwork and the Subjectivity, or can be understood from the elements with permanent truth behind the artwork. The third part using the theory of pheonomenology and existentialism to redefine the value of brushstroke and texture on oil painting and the creation itself.
