In1940, Mao Zedong wrote his famous work On New Democracy, in which the New Democratic Culture is described as "a national, scientific and mass culture","an anti-imperialist and anti-feudal culture of the people under the leadership of the proletariat". From1937to1949, the Communist Party of China developed new-democratic revolutionary practice in the liberated area. Intellectuals of different culture identities from the garrets and the mountains come together to Yan’an, forming a cultural imbalance. In Mao’s speech at the Forum of Art and Literature in Yan’an in1942,"popularization" was defined as the direction of Chinese new democratism cultural revolution, the multiple cultures and voices in the border region are supposed to be integrated in this way. In this paper Ding Ling and Zhao Shuli are chosen as representatives of two different culture identities, their writing are interpreted as a participation of revolutionary practice. Thus the identification, emotional experience and transformation of political imagination of the intellectuals in the board regionin during the popularisaction revolution are the presented, historical connotation of new-democratic revolution are revealed and the experience and crisis of "Yan’an Road" are analyzed.In the first chapter discussion is developed on the discourses of individualism in the left-wing literature. By the review of Ding Ling’s writing in1930s, the chapter discusses the representative dilemma between the private and the public which was common on the road of turning left. The second chapter presents an investigation on Ding Ling in Northern Shanxi. How she turned from a writer to a staff member, and the consequent remodeling of public-private relationship. The third chapter focuses on the novel of the sun shines over the sanggan river. After the Yan’an Rectification, the popularization of literature by the way of emotional change has solved the tense between the private and the public. The forth chapter focuses on the folk character in Zhao Shuli’s writing, which leads to different interpretation on the "mass culture". Chapter five discusses Zhao Shuli’s writing pratice as a "translator" under the specific political background in the revolutionary base area, revealing the contradiction and incompleteness in new democratism cultual revolution.
