ObjectiveTo observe the clinical effect and mechanism of electro-acupuncture combined with dietary adjustment to treat simple obesity. To observe the efficacy of electro-acupuncture combined with diet control in treating simple obesity, and compare with electro-acupuncture and diet control respectively. To find the best therapeutic method to treat simple obesity, which can increase the curative rate with less sequelae.MethodsSimple obesity patients (n=90) were randomized to 3 groups, treatment group(n=30) received the treatment of acupuncture combined with dietary adjustment, while control group 1(n=30) treated by electroacupuncture and control group 2(n=30) received dietary adjustment. During 3 phases of treatment, obesity indexes are evaluated at the end of the study. The observational indexes include body weight, waist and hip circumference, also the thigh, calf and upper arm girth, body mass index(BMI),the content of subcutaneous and visceral fat (FAT&VFA) .All statistical analyses were performed using the software statistical package SPSS version 19.0.ResultsObesity indexes decreased significantly in all the 3groups. In the treatment group, body weight, waist and hip circumference, BMI,FAT and VFA,these indexes were obviously decreased, which indicated statistically significant difference before and after treatment(P< 0.01); Although in the acupuncture group, patients’body weight, waist and hip circumference, BMI,FAT,VFA decreased after treatment(P<0.05),but other indexes had no statistically significant differences (P>0.05).Treatment group,Compared with control group 1, there were no significant differences in all the obesity indexes(P>0.05).Nonetheless it still indicated that acupuncture combined with dietary adjustment group is better than acupuncture group in declining some of the obesity indexes. The body weight, waist and hip circumference,BMI,FAT and VFA for the treatment group were significantly different from the control group 2,which the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01),but there was no significant difference in the thigh, calf and upper arm girth. The results illustrated the acupuncture combined with dietary adjustment group is better than dietary adjustment group in improving some of the obesity indexes.Compared between the two control groups, there were significant differences in weight, waist and hip circumference, BMI,FAT and VFA(P<0.05),other indexes had no statistically significant differences(P>0.05).The data demonstrated that the efficiency of declining the certain obesity indexes, acupuncture group was higher than the dietary adjustment group, but no better than the acupuncture combined with dietary adjustment group. The overall efficient of treatment group was 93.4%,control group 1 was 76.7%,control group 2 was 66.7%.Acupuncture combined with dietary adjustment group’s therapeutic effect was obvious, the overall efficient was higher than the other groups(x2=19.019, P=0.004,P<0.01), which had statistical significance.ConclusionElectro-acupuncture combined dietary adjustment, acupuncture alone or dietary adjustment alone, these therapeutic methods are effective. But the combination of electro-acupuncture and dietary adjustment is therefore the optimal treatment for simple obesity, especially in declining the body weight, waist and hip circumference, BMI,FAT and VFA.
