ObjectiveThis study based on ancient and present references related to the applications of Flower Herbals in health-care and treatment and carried on the theory research and inductive analysis systematacially, and attempted to do applied research according to the theoretical basis so as to understand the health-care and treatment value of Flower Herbals overall and systematically, and provide the fundamental basis and ideas for the application and development.Methods1 Information searchAncient bibliographic search:read deeply materia medica、prescriptions、 cookbooks、health care books and relevant historical data.Modern document and information retrieval:read deeply Chinese materia medica, The Dictionary of chinese medicinal (2005 edition) and other authoritative monographs, retrieve CNKI, Duxiu Knowledge Search Database, VIP journal net, wanfang database, etc.2 Comprehensive inductionSynthesize the ancient and modern literature and conclude the development general situation and the modern studies of Flower Herbals, compile and organize the application methods in health-care. Synthesize the results from frequency statistics analysis and conclude the general characteristics of Flower Herbals in nature, efficacy, chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and the application in health-care and treatment. Synthesize regional characteristics of Lingnan and conclude the principles of selecting food materials for summer healthy diets.3 Database query statistical methodsBuild database of Flower Herbals and do frequency analysis by using the searching and counting function.4 Pharmacological experimentDo animal experiments to study whether or not Five Flowers Liquorice Platycodon Root Tea can soothe the throat according to the function evaluation methodology from State Food & Drug Administration notice No.[2012]107 for health food.Results1 Clarified the meaning of Flower Herbals, systematacially presented the development general situation and the modern studies of Flower Herbals. Flower Herbals are flowers which have health-care and treatment value. The applications of Flower Herbals in health-care and treatment have a long history. Since ancient times, they have played important roles in food and drink, medicine, improving looks, health-care and treatment. With the gradually deepening study of Chinese herbal medicine over recent years, the nutritive value, medicinal value and beauty value of the common Plower Herbals have been gradually explored, and lots of functional products of Flower Herbals have been developed and are available. The modern studies of Flower Herbals mainly focus on deeply exploring plenty of nutritional ingredients, bioactive constituents and various pharmacological effects. Furthermore in clinical application of Flower herbals, based on years of clinical experiences from many doctors, Flower Herbals may show benefits for the treatment of certain conditions like spleen and stomach disease, gynecological diseases, skin diseases, etc.2 Builded database of Flower Herbals including 386 Flower herbals and 957 prescriptions. Synthesize the results from frequency statistics analysis and conclude the general characteristics of Flower Herbals in nature, efficacy, chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and the application in health-care and treatment. A lot of Flower Herbals are neutral in nature, mainly bitter flavor, belong to Liver Meridian. Most Flower Herbals are non-toxic and tend to be opened, diffused, gentle. There are many different types of prescriptions which usually were used for spleen disease, lung disease, liver disease, exogenous febrile diseases, skin disease, suppurative infection on the body surface, emmeniopathy and disorders of head and face.3 Organized eight methods of the application of Flower Herbals in health-care. The experimental results showed that in rats cotton ball implantation test, the granulomanet weights of test product middle dose group and high dose group were obviously lower than those of blank group(P<0.05,0.01); in rats’toes swelling test, there were no significant differences in toes swelling rates between each test product group and blank group at each time point (P>0.05); in mice ear swelling test, compared with blank group the mice ear swelling rates of test product middle dose group decreased significantly(P<0.05). From these results, the animal experimental results about test product’s function of soothing the throat can be judged to be positive, which implied that Five Flowers Liquorice Platycodon Root Tea would be developed to be health food with the function of soothing the throat hopefully.Conclusion1 The theoretical research showed that the applications of Flower Herbals in health-care and treatment have a long history with rich content, is worth of inheritance and development. Flower Herbals are of highly health-care and treatment value and have good study, application and development prospect. The general characteristics of Flower Herbals in nature, efficacy, chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and the application in health-care and treatment can be used as the basis for the application and development in health-care and treatment.2 The applied research showed that Flower Herbals could be integrated into summer daily healthy diets and gave full play to the health-care efficacy, which was one effective way to popularize the application of Flower Herbals among modern people. It was an idea for Flower Herbals’functional products development to conduct animal experiments according to the function evaluation methodology from State Food & Drug Administration notice for health food.
