Objective:To retrospectively analyze the the patient characteristics and clinical outcomes of adult brainstem glioma and study the relevant factors influencing the prognosis of adult brainstem glioma.Methods:For52patients were diagnosed with adult brainstem glioma in The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University during March2007to March2012, the following data were collected and systemized, including age, gender, diagnosis incubation period, tumor classification, whether contrast enhancement of MR was noted in focus area, whether operation was performed and the operation type, pathological type, WHO grading, whether radiotherapy and chemotherapy were conducted and survival time. Firstly, the overall survival rate of the52patients was calculated and the correlation of survival time with the single factors mentioned above was analyzed. Then, multi-factor regression analysis was performed which included such single factors as those correlated with prognosis and the ones believed to hold clinical significance.Results:1. Within the52patients during the follow-up visits, the overall2-year survival rate was81.8%with the median survival time being61months.2. Single factor analysis showed that the survival rate of the52patients (aging from20to68with median age of31,17cases older than40and35cases younger than40) was correlated with their age at the time of initial diagnosis,. KPS grade (40cases (76.9%)>70,12cases (23.1%)<70) was correlated with the survival time with. Patient survival time was also correlated with WHO grading (37cases of I-II grade,9cases of Ⅲ grade,6cases of IV grade).3. Multi factor COX retrospective analysis showed that the prognosis was correlated with WHO grading and KPS grade at diagnosis.Conclusion:1.KPS grade at the time of initial diagnosis was correlated withprognosis of adult brainstem glioma,The patients with KPS grade over70had better prognosis.2. The patients with Ⅰ-Ⅱ WHO grading had better prognosis than WHO grading Ⅲ-Ⅳ.3.The age at the time of initial diagnosis may be correlated with the prognosis,it’s need a more samples perspective study to testify.
