Part Ⅰ. A Case-control Study of Pancreatic Cancer and Diabetes MellitusBackground&Aims:Pancreatic cancer (PaC) and Diabetes Mellitus (DM) are thought to be associated. We performed a retrospective case-control study to see the clinical characteristics and prevalence of DM in subjects with PaC.Methods:A total of137patients with pancreatic cancer and145control patients were enrolled in the study. Then we reviewed the clinical history of each subjects to collect the information needed and set a database. The diagnosis of DM was based on WHO criteria (1999).Results:The prevalence of DM in case group and control group was35.77%and17.24%respectively, p<0.001, OR=2.887,95%CI1.641-5.080. Among all the DM subjects, the proportion of new on-set ones was63.27%and44.00%in case group and control group respectively. Conclusion:Diabetes Mellitus maybe both a risk factor and one of the manifestations of pancreatic cancer.Part Ⅱ. The Expression of Toll-like Receptor4in Human Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma and Pancreas TissueBackground&Aims:To have a general knowledge of the expression of TLR4in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and pancreas tissue. Methods:The expression of TLR4was detected by immunohistochemistry staining. Results:In human pancreas, pancreatic ductal cells and islet cells express TLR4. The expression of TLR4was increased both in diabetes mellitus and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tissue. Conclusion:The increased expression of TLR4in pancreas may both induce diabetes mellitus and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Furthermore the TLR4may play an important role in cancer progression.
