The global market is marching into a personalized consumption time, so the product which can show the unique characteristic will be more and more popular among customers. The diversification, specialization and taste-self of user requirements, are pushing the personalized customization into a hotspot in manufacturing research and application. The present research mostly based on the view of enterprise development strategy and operation to define the importance and feasibility of personalized customization for the enterprises. There is little research on the cognitive characteristics, ability involved, method adapted and the cheerful experience of consumers during the customization operation process.We seek for a consumer-oriented method in product’s form design to demonstrate the process in a more intuitional, convenient, easily-operated and interactional way.Referring to the concept of “symbol” from Chinese tradition, as well as the relative thoughts from modern morphology, we put forward the concepts of “meta symbol”. That means a complex form can be broken down into a variety of morphological characteristics, which can be represented as different meta symbols. Besides, referring to the demand for all kinds of morphological changes of consumer, we built three relation operations and their rules, the replace operation, merge operation and interpolation operation. Meta symbols and their operations are basic to the method of “Meta Symbol Design”.According to the classification and composition, we regarded meta symbol as an adjustable factor, with three kinds of relation operations as a rule. Different 3D models are changed by different metal symbols transform with CAID technology, and the result will be showed on an intuitive and convenient interactive platform. The whole process can be called the method of Meta Symbol Design(MSD). The MSD is totally different from traditional ideas which use dot, line and plane to control the form of 3d virtual model of CAID. So MSD can reduce difficulty and complexity of operation when someone learns of the 3d form design.Taking car wheel for example, we expound the ways extracting the meta symbols of wheel, their classification and their operational rules in detail.By virtue of CAID software, we put forward a realization to the MSD. Based on the curved surface modeling software of RHINO and the plugin GRASSHOPPER, we transform the meta symbol shape into lattice control factor(GRASSHOPPER own function) as a secondary development, so it can realize the meta symbol guided deformation. Furthermore, we points out that the wheel part deformation can be realized directly in CREO software modeling platform, the variant collocation of wheels can be realized by the VRP 3d-visualization platform including color customization, pattern customization as well as car body and hub matching display.Finally, MSD is applied to the development of personalized wheel-form system. We establish the customization process and the framework based on meta symbol, focusing on the overall customization, partial customize and collocation customization. We designed and then tested the interface and operation of personalized customization APP. Through the intuitive and simple operation, users quickly get the satisfactory results as well as the correlative information. APP experiment further verifies the convenience and ease of use of MSD.Using wheel form customization system is flexible, convenient, can be quickly learned and easy to use. It builds a platform between manufacturing enterprises and clients, eliminating the blind areas between them.
