There are several approaches in case study for architecture. The approach orientated by design process takes sketches, architect’s self-explain texts, historical background texts as key resources, so as to uncover the architect’s thinking process, following both internal and external clues, including the starting point, design process, materialization and construction. And then we have the chance to capture the architect’s design methodology. This article used the approach described above as a tool, to study architect Carlo Scarpa’s design methodology.Begin with work of Negozio Olivetti, we make primary hypothesis of Scarpa’s design methodology. Then the article focused to uncover two design processes and to analysis their design logic: the second phase of Museo di Castelvecchio, and the early stage of Banca Popolare di Verona. We concluded that the starting point of Carlo Scarpa’design is formed by problem-orientated thinking, and his design method could be described as ―Iteration of relationship‖, asist with overall concept control and a restrained attitude towards image references. This method assures a full-scale, effective, accurate, integrated discussion of relationships, and results in a multiple-implied and free architectural experience.
