With the rapid development of scientific technology and the continuous progress of social civilization, the supply of industrial products has been becoming more abundant. But the products’ homogenization phenomena are also becoming more obvious. The consumers are more willing to pursue unique and personalized style because the sameness of product style cannot satisfy their needs any longer. Therefore, how to meet customers’ cognitive needs for varied and personalized product style and promote their satisfaction is a big realistic problem modern enterprises are facing. The formation of product style is the result of the subjects’ aesthetic appreciation of the objects, which conveys the abstract aesthetic concept and determines that the research objects should include the characteristics of solid modeling and image cognition as well. Meanwhile, the industrial design is also a creative decision-making process, which is the core competitive power of modern enterprises. Therefore, the methodological study on conceptual design on the basis of style cognition is not only a creative exploration, but also a representation of the mutual interests between enterprises and consumers.The main objective of this paper is to realize the innovation of product style based on the needs of style cognition. This paper investigates the ways and methods to achieve research goals from three aspects: study on theoretical basis, study on applied technology and realization of applied technology. In the part of the study on theoretical basis, this paper explores knowledge conversion among physics domain, cognition domain, problem domain and solution domain from the two perspectives of how to design styles and image cognition, based on which this paper also constructs a concept model of product style design domain. In the part of the study on applied technology, this paper, firstly, proposes the formation mechanism of the style cognition physically stimulated by the characteristics of solid modeling, under the theoretical guidance of the transformation of coach style knowledge. Then, this paper takes coach products as an example and proposes the construction and representation method of style cognition space, according to the experiment of style semantic characteristics. In addition, this paper establishes the extraction method of crucial geometrical characteristics which affect style cognition, according to the extraction experiment of the crucial geometrical characteristics of coach style and the eyes movement tracing validation experiment. It also proposes a method to calculate the contribution of the key geometric features to coach style adopting analytic hierarchy process. At last, this paper constructs a quantitative and qualitative conversion model of coach style according to normalized representation of the key elements of product style semantic characteristics and geometrical characteristics. In the part of realization of applied technology, this paper, at first, studies matching relationship between product style semantic characteristics and geometrical characteristics, and constructs structure layer model of product style through different knowledge particle sizes. Based on the model, the paper brings forward metadata index mechanism about the style of coach and crucial geometrical characteristics. Then, the paper adopts extenics theory, and studies the possibility and variety of extension of product style characteristics from the perspective of qualitative needs. And it comes up with a method to draw up conceptual design based on extension of geometrical characteristics of similar cases. A brief analysis of constringency mechanism of conceptual design is followed, from the perspective of coach design restrictions. At last, a creative conceptual design prototype system of coach on the basis of style cognition is developed, which is based on all the above studies on theories and realization technology. SC-CAID prototype system as an instrument is tailored to designers to enlighten their design thinking. It can also help designers to develop the design thinking in the early stages from the perspective of customer needs about style, so as to realize conceptual design innovations.
