In respond to the large-scale urban reconstruction and information society triggered by computer revolution, with the revival of contemporary landscape architecture and landscape urbanism, Mapping is becoming a term which arouses various discussions and practices in fields of contemporary culture, art and design. For architecture, on one hand, mapping can be the instrument to helps architects catch on the contemporary world; on the other hand, it can be a medium which links landscape, architecture and urban. Besides, mapping tries to extend the research on architectural drawing and to provide new operable and effective instrument.Historic exploration and theory research are two basic views of the thesis. The purpose is to sort out and analyze the historical theory and practice of this topic in the West, and hope to put forward some critical thought. The basic technical route is through interpretational historical research method, composite narrative graphic and induction method. Beside the historic analysis and research, the thesis targets at the combination of landscape, urban and architecture in the context of Landscape Urbanism.Based on the interdisciplinary systematic theory research and practical research of the western cases, the thesis continues to study a case of Xinjiekou Area, in which a visualization re produce experiment of the non-physical space has been conducted. The case analysis of Xinjiekou Area tries to give an operable way of mapping as practical strategy and representational tool, and finally indicates the theoretical value and innovative value of Mapping.The thesis also takes a profound consideration of Chinese architectural mapping research and practice. The thesis tries to propose opinions and suggestions, hoping to bring new viewpoints or inspiration to Chinese Architecture.
