I.M.Pei’s Architectures’ Aesthetic Theory

The paper selects the aesthetic point of view of Marxist philosophy as the basis for argument, discusses the aesthetic thought the famous Chinese architect IM Pei’s architectures.From1935year to now, I.M.Pei studied architecture and works. He experienced mordenism, postmodernism, structuralism, deconstructionism thoughts. Trends come and go in westen buildings. I.M. Pei has maintained a cautious approach to explore the essence of modernist architecture in the eternal. We feel the beauty of four forms from his architectures----function and technique, space, harmony with the environment, the traditional culture.The second chapter discusses the function and technic of architecture. The architectural design theory before Modernism, hasn’t seen the function as a kind of architectural beauty. They considered the form and decorative were art and beauty. The advocates of modernism seen the function as the first important, and the function of the building reflected the apparent form. Pei can skillfully show rational construction in his architectures. In addition, low-cost materials will also be included in the IM Pei to aesthetic range. He explored due to the material itself and the presentation of the new, meaningful architectural beauty of form.Chapter Three discusses the relationship between his architectures and people. Variants and media or anthropomorphic empathy is an emotion that everyone has the emotional resonance of another person and the same emotion he generated. It is the first time people’s emotional feelings become objects and become the image of the object can make use of diverse and delicate convey emotions. All these show, everything under the spiritual relationship between man and the outside world, are hidden spiritual relationships between people. Relations between people and objects is an interpersonal relationship. The relationship between objects is the projection of interpersonal relationship. The relationship also exists in the field of beaty and art. The architect uses architectures to show his understanding of the interpersonal relationship and deliver his understanding. Then the paper discuss the space of Pei’s buildings, including gray space, outdoor space, indoor atrium space.Chapter Four discusses the relationship between Pei’s architectures and surrounding. The relationship between building and surrounding also shows the interpersonal relationship. I.M.Pei is interested in "The architectural integration into the surrounding environment". Pei’s Architecture has been working harmony with the environment with both full consideration of the environment but also has a popular form of expression. Human add color to the nature, but also nature stimulate human creativity.I.M.Pei’s architctures show the idea. If the project is in the city, surrounded by history buildings or Classical Architecture, Pei used to consider the place, the function and the type of building, and then, select the opposite materials and styling. At moste times, Pei used to use cast concrete as the building material, and use simple window opening. This style and the classical buildings complement each other. The grey cast concrete buildings with simple geometric modeling, looks very modest before the classical buildings.Chapter Four discusses how I.M.Pei’s architectures show the beauty of tranditional culture. The future begins at the past. Histry is the base of creating new subject. Although I.M.Pei studied modernism at Harvard University, he still think, we should respect tranditional culture. If build atchitecture at the place with long traditional culture, Pei will study the local culture, and make the atchitecture show the culture. He said,"I think the study method is very good. It riched my knowledge, and make my design better."In Fragrant Hill Hotel and Suzhou Museum, he use the modern material to show the Artistic conception of Chinese traditional garden. In Japan, Pei created a secret "Peach Blossom Garden". From the geometric sequence on Traditional Islamic architectures, Pei fund the charm of Islamic architecture. Pei’s Museum of Islamic Art at Doha, is a link between the past and today. In the light, it is a brilliant Arts Center.The conclusion part discussed I.M.Pei’s architecture’s station in the history and the it’s significant. I.M.Pei created a special architecture aesthetics for the world. He showed a new view to find and know the beauty of architecture and feel the colorful local culture, and think more about the relationship between human and nature. His architectures are so important.
