The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine, as the important part of The summer Mountain Resort and The Outer Temples in Chengde, contains precious historical and cultural information. The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine was established in 1767-1771, spanning more than 240 years of history. During this period, the temple has been transformed in terms of architectural form,layout, overall style and so on. The first chapter in this paper make a research on the construction and maintenance about The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine, and on the basis of this,it intends to research the situation when the temple was just built, in order to fully demonstrate the 240 years of vicissitudes of this temple.The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine, as a Qing Dynasty royal Tibetan Buddhist monastery,has special style of architecture. Tibetan architectural style is dominant and the Chinese style is auxiliary. The second and third chapter in this paper, the different aspects of building the temple are analyzed, including the site selection, spatial layout, the layout features, architectural features and so on, so as to make systematic research, fully representing its architectural style.The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine, which was built for imitating Potala Palace in Tibet, is a traditional Chinese architectural masterpiece in the history. The forth chapter will make a comparison between The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine and its prototype- the Potala Palace in Tibet, in terms of the function, site selection, spatial layout, single building, building materials,construction practices, in order to highlight its outstanding achievements. In addition to contrasts The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine and western architectures in the same period, on the basis of the comparative study, it is proved that building of The Temple of Potalaka Doctrine is a success, but the success is only the combination of Chinese traditional architecture concept for two thousand years rather than making some breakthrough in the construction technology and building concept. It is the peak of Chinese feudal tradition.The Preservation and Restoration Project of the Temple of Potalaka Doctrine, started in2013, provides a good opportunity for the study of this paper. The fifth chapter, combining the theory and practice, makes an in-depth analysis for the Protection and Restoration of the Temple of Potalaka Doctrine, elaborates some thinkings of the repair protection system at the present stage in China, in order to lay a good foundation for the future protection andrestoration of the temple.
