“The Five Ridges is the arm of the South Yue, come from Dayu Moutain, as far as theSouth China Sea”.GuangZhou, the ancient city which locate in the Unique geographical pattern ofmountains and rivers, was described the ancients in the book of 《Ancient notes of the City of(Five) Goats》:Wu Ling stand to the North, Ocean to the East, Rivers in the former,Mountains in the post”. In two thousand years of historical changes, GuangZhou is the corearea of South of the Five Ridges.In the thousands of years of city development process, The builders created the city basedon the unique natural environment. Until the Ming and Qing Dynasties, The ancient city ofGuangzhou is a masterpiece of Art of China’s ancient city.However, in an era of rapid modernization, we have neglected the understanding of thetraditional to the city spatial distribution about Guangzhou of the rapid modernization in thecity. We gradually lose our characteristic in city which have an important place in the wholeworld and we can all be proud.There is a series of seasons result in the Characteristics of the ancient city fade afterdelivery such as the turbulent modern social background, the development of economy, thepolicy direction and the skimpy level environment and so on. But the basic reason for that isthe "rupture" of traditional architectural thoughts for ancient city. We do not seize the “soul”of the city-The city spatial distribution which the most important characters.“The spatial pattern of the ancient city of Ming and Qing dynasties” is the mostimportant which can reflect the priceless heritage of the city characteristics about Guangzhou.The characteristics of the ancient city protection is a whole system engineering that shouldmake a protection and renewal of the city spatial distribution which reflect the special featuresnot only confined to single building, city axis or the old city quarter partly. To the city withthe ancient city spatial distribution which has been disturbed should be made to explore thespatial pattern characteristics more efforts and pay attention to the protection and renovationof the ancient city of the problem though the systematic vision of spatial pattern. The paper uses methods to collect and analyses the related references, map analysis,data analysis, compare and inductive analysis about protection and the historical developmentand evolution of the spatial distribution pattern of ancient city. Use the ancient city ofGuangzhou in Ming and Qing dynasties as the starting point, sum up the characteristic ofspatial distribution pattern, traditional architectural thoughts and historical development andevolution. Review of the urban construction during the republican period and period offounding the state when the thought from western urban vision and architectural design wasintroduced and conclude the development characteristic for the two periods. With researchproject of the advanced experience about the urban conservation and urban renewal abroad forreference and base on the historical development and evolution of the spatial distributionpattern of ancient city, the paper explore the method of conservation and renewal of spatialdistribution pattern of ancient city. Come up with that the protection and renewaldevelopment to the ancient city should base on the integrality of the spatial distributionpattern of ancient city.
