As the world’s second largest economy unit, Chinese design innovationcapability has attracted criticism around the world, which is caused mostly by relyingon the design system of the west. Chinese design is urgent to form the unique systemincluding design theory, design method and design evaluation system, thus we couldhave own position and the right to speak in the design field. In today’s age of plenty,China contemporary design need meet with Chinese users whose demand for spiritseems to be more urgent, so the strategy of developing China design can only seekfrom cultural origin of us.This paper selects the five areas mostly close to the Zen Culture and Design: the‘impermanence’,‘by means of non-literature’,‘the only proper course to take’,‘Enlightenment’,‘empty’, thoroughgoing excavates the aesthetic ideas and discussesthe aesthetics of contemporary design inspiration. Firstly,‘impermanence’ outlook isbasic attitude of Zen looking at the world, this paper summed up three kinds ofaesthetic concepts including ‘imperfect beauty’,‘incomplete beauty’ and ‘uncertaintybeauty’ based on the derivative of the esthetics thought, points out their differenceswith western aesthetics, discusses the practical guide to modern design from theaesthetic ideas of contemporary design with examples. Secondly,‘by means ofnon-literature Zen’ which is an important characteristic different from the primitiveBuddhism, developed the design method of a minimalist aesthetic and design of‘origin’. The paper points out that Zen minimalist beauty whose nature belongs to thespiritual level comes from religion, while the Western minimalism whose naturebelongs to the material level stems from the essence of technology. Then describedthe influence of the minimalism especially Zen painting on Chinese literati painting, and analyzes its application in Japanese landscape design, architectural design andindustrial design. The design method of ‘design origin’ requires the designer havingthe ability to explore the source of the design, so the paper combined with a lampdesign, and discussed that the design should begin with the view of the origin andcould maximize the possibility and design innovation. Thirdly,‘Enlightenment’, Zenenlightenment is the same and design. This paper discussed and obtained the inspiration of ‘enlightenment dawn’ and ‘Epiphany’, expatiated the detailed processof innovative design from the ‘no’ to ‘have’ from the three levels of understanding, discussed the principles of psychology design insight combined with theoreticalknowledge on mental module psychology, and proposed that the deconstruction of theold mental module could be the only method of obtaining the design innovation. Forth,‘the only proper course to take’, this is the Zen enlightenment to obtain the highestDharma Buddha nature. This paper points out that ‘the only proper course to take’ isthe essence of the transcendence of binary opposition between the two. This way ofthinking with oriental characteristics, and then puts forward the possibility oftranscending the conflict of ‘dynamic’ and ‘static’,‘symmetry’ and ‘asymmetric’. Inthe aspects of design and application, the paper proposed the design philosophy of‘moving from static to dynamic’ and ‘static display design idea’, and the specificmodeling method beyond the symmetry and asymmetry in the modeling design. Fifth, the ‘empty’view is the key code of practice,‘empty’is not nothing, this paper pointedout that space is the essence of ‘vacuum false’, in the design, aesthetic ideologyreflects ‘does not have’‘inclusive’. According to China poetry, painting, this paperdiscussed the influence of ‘empty’ on Chinese traditional literary and artistic creation, and searched the inspiration of ‘empty’on graphic design and contemporary industrialdesign.Culture and design is the mutual promotion, through in-depth study of Zenaesthetic ideology ‘impermanence’‘by means of non-literature’‘enlightenment’‘theonly proper course to take’ and ‘empty’, the paper summarizes some design methodsand theory which is different from the western, and combining with the examples, demonstrates how to guide the design practice. Design is an important carrier ofculture, this paper which reveals the specific designs to some extent provides a kindof thought for the Zen culture inheritance and development in modern society.
