Office is so commonly used in people’s daily life that the amount of civil construction ismerely next to residential buildings. For this reason, it is significant to carry out relevantresearches for this building type.Window is an important building component as the major interface of internal andexternal environment. It affects working environment, and thereby causes impact to user’sefficiency, mental and physical health. Window design must respect user’s requirement of theworking environment, including the objective acoustic; lighting and thermal conditions andsubjective feelings. About window design, architects are mainly based on the relevantnational and local standards, regulations and personal experience. User’s requirement can onlybe presented by architect’s understanding. While, the architect’s understanding would beaffected by personal thought, ideas of the building owner, government requirement andcontractor’s suggestions, as a result, user’s feeling is often distorted. Therefore, it ismeaningful for the study to specialized user’s evaluation of window designed in offices.Subjective feeling is related to regional climate, culture and living habits. To the samephysical environment, there will be different judgments of the users from different regions.Considering geographical factors, this study will be based on Guangzhou, a major city insouthern China. This study mainly includes:1. User’s evaluation of the importance of window in working spaces;2. User’s subjective evaluation of the characteristics of window, such as size, form, location, etc.3. User’s behavior of opening window for ventilation;4. User’s behavior of using natural lighting; The above studies basically cover the major aspects of the influence from window tooffice occupants, including visual impact, ventilation and lighting. The approaches of this research mainly apply the POE (Post-Occupancy Evaluation)Process, including questionnaires and behavioral observations, as the user’s assessment datacollection process. Furthermore, the research analyzes the obtained data with certain statisticalsoftware to find evaluation results. As the complementary applications of the traditionalquestionnaires, this study introduce computer rendering simulation scenes in conjunction withquestionnaires. Taking the advantage of the highly simulated scenarios, the evaluationreferences become more intuitive and comparable than simple text description. In addition to traditional paper-based medium, this research also conducts network survey to improve theefficiency and accuracy of data collecting. Finally, the research finds some useful results in all the aspects mentioned above, including quantitative data and qualitative descriptions, representing a subjective idealwindow status in Guangzhou offices. To some extent, the conclusions of the research arevaluable to developers, designers and property managers of office buildings meanwhile, incomparison with other related research findings, the research can discover the influence fromdifferent regions on user’s subjective evaluation of working environment. The differencesbetween native and foreign users can be a meaningful factor on considering the introductionof foreign developed design methods, construction technology, building equipment andmaterials. This is the practical value of the study. There are two innovation of this research. First is the application of computer simulationtechnology combined with traditional user’s survey methods. It is a useful attempt forpost-evaluation process. Secondly, this study is the first systematically induction of user’ssubjective survey about the general factors of windows in Guangzhou offices. The specificdetails of this research have also reached a certain depth. As a whole, it demonstrates adetailed process of user’s evaluation research on a certain building component, which is blankin Chinese architectural study. And the particular conclusions could be valuable reference foracademic and design professional.
