The development of city square in modern and contemporary in China is a complete historical processes with historical continuity and immanent regularity. To reevaluate and rearrange the clue of historical development, and then a new research framework will be established. This dissertation uses interdisciplinary theory to mainly analysis how the modern and contemporary factors such as political though, economic culture, social psychology and so on impact on people’s values and life style even on the city square. The discussion is around the issue of analyses in the development of city square in modern and contemporary in China under the background of Chinese traditional culture based on own professional characteristics and the current development of city square. Set the change of historical time as the main longitudinal axis, the development of city square in different historical periods and the interaction of social economy and culture as the axis of pitch to grasp the development of city square and the immanent regularity.During the processes of the development of city square in modern and contemporary in China, one aspect is the continuation and development of traditional city square design, another aspect is the spread and influence of Western design ideas. Their interaction and interfusion is the mainstream of the development. Chapter One of this dissertation focuses on the basic character of Chinese traditional city square design prior to the Opium War, including design idea, formal features, decoration technique of Chinese traditional city square and so on. This part serves as a connecting link between the preceding and the following. Chapter Two, Three, Four are the entry point and text emphasis of this dissertation. Chapter Two introduces in detail the historical background of introduction of western ideas of design and the way they spread as well as their impact and influence upon Chinese traditional city square and the passive acceptance of Chinese city square. Chapter Three mainly discusses the development of Chinese city square during the planned economical period, exploring the impact of unified guiding ideology on city square during this period deeply. Chapter Four mainly explores the diverse trend of Chinese city square’s constrution during the new period. At the same time, under the social background of The Trend of Squares’, a series of problems faced by city square are expounded well.The final part of this dissertation mainly explores to construct the daily life design of city square in oder to combine this dissertation’s research achievement into practical citizen life, clarify the relationship between city square and citizens-"Citizens construct the square and conversely the square influences citizens" to build citizens’sense of identity in city square. The conclusive part of this dissertation is a brief review and summary of the development of modern contemporary Chinese city square, putting forward the concept of sustainable development and ecological and green ideas. These two concepts will remain the direction pursued and explored by the Chinese academic community in21st century which is full of challenges and opportunities.
