In Chinese classical garden, there are a large number of building types, and there is also thediversity of the naming form for various types of buildings. The classification and naming, retainflexible intermediation tradition since ancient times, with vague significance boundaries. Fromancient people’s classification methods we can see that the relationship between the meanings ofthese definitions are not just parallel, one of them may include another, or some of them may besimilar to each other, or some of them may have overlapping parts. A specific landscape building, only according to its shape and appearance, is often difficult to follow the formal logic andsimplistic, linear manner to be classified into different building types such as Ting, Tai, Lou, Ge orTang, Xie, Xuan, Guan, etc.Actually, in the field of artistic creation including the garden, ancient Chinese never rigidly stickto the naming of formal logic, and in the understanding of “ming-shi” and “yan-yi-xiang”, moreincline to dialectical thinking, thinking in images, as well as of poetic thinking. This phenomenon is very common and prominent in Classical gardens. Based on the gardencreation, the ancients inclined regulating the building names through deep cultural connotations, poetic fine titles; or skillfully using allusion to conduct hermeneutic re-creation, to increase thegarden’s history context, to express the pursue of ideals and personality; or intending to take thecharm of paintings of the famous poem, to cause the poetic aesthetic association, to make morerich and elegant aesthetic intention. So those directly affected the naming ways of all types ofbuildings in Chinese classical gardens, and clearly underline the excellent of the ancients thought.Based on full interpretation of Chinese ancient traditional way of thinking and the pursuit ofethical values, as well as the summary concept of traditional Chinese architecture, this thesiscarries out a more systematic study of classification and naming among Chinese ancientarchitecture including landscape architecture. It combines with the application of traditionalChinese philosophy of language, as well as typical theoretical reference of contemporary Westernphilosophy system, clarifies the traditional building naming and classification rules andcharacteristics, and enlightens the deep aesthetic significance of context. The thesis focus on the“language” level which carry spiritual significance as the imaginary core element in the garden, and comprehension of the traditional architectural context come-into-being beyond the level of“objects” to the “heart” in order to more deeply understand the essence of Chinese classicalgardens.
