Research On Chinese Modern Furniture In View Of Design Principle Inheritance

The Chinese traditional furniture has taken the inspiration and enlightenment to western modern designers, and promoted many fantastic furniture design works. How to modernize Chinese traditional furniture has been a hot research topic in Chinese design field since 1990’s, but still exists some problems, such as lack of systematicness of theory research, the fuzzy point and low innovation efficiency of practice application and so on. The research on Chinese modern furniture carried on by taking the commonness of design principle of Chinese traditional and modern furniture for angle, also according to the theory research basement of Chinese traditional furniture and western modern furniture. The aim is to analyze the design principle standing for the rules and essence of traditional furniture, clear the evolution way of design principle inheritance in modern furniture design from 1980’s to now, and finally submit the traditional furniture modernized methods. This research generates the theoretical meaning to the study of design thinking and methods from Chinese traditional and modern furniture, also the realistic meaning to promote the transformation of Chinese furniture industry and development of Chinese furniture design.This research constructs the study mode of traditional furniture modernized design theory and methods, which containing "inheritance origin", "inheritance evolution", and "inheritance confluence". The "inheritance origin" including chapter 2 and 3:the study extracts the design principle existed in traditional furniture function, structure, form and "integration design", also carries Kansei imagery research on Chinese traditional furniture with Quantification Theory Type I. The "inheritance evolution" including chapter 4,5,6 and 7: the study clears the design principle inheritance way of Chinese modern furniture from 1980’s, 1990’s and 21th. Also carry the inheritance study and Kansei imagery study on "East-West Furniture" which is a typical example of design principle inheritance. The "inheritance confluence" including chapter 8:take the study on relative furniture research with the system of signans and designatum, which highlighting the feasibility features of the research on design principle.The research enhances the enlightenment of ergonomics and utility in function, mortise-and-tenon in structure, modern aesthetics and thinking how to design with relative elements in form. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the promotion of systematic thinking existed in traditional furniture called "integration design" for modem furniture, uncovers the evolution way of inheritance from following, confusing to innovation of Chinese modern furniture from 1980’s,1990’s to 21th, submits the modernized application way of traditional furniture design elements based on modern aesthetics, and constructs the design evaluation way of traditional furniture modernized based on imagery commonness, also submits a way to compare and evaluate the relative furniture research with "implied meaning", designatum derivation and shift, signans diversity and designatum intersectionality. The conclusion all above can supply references to Chinese furniture designers.The contents and masterstroke of the research are traditional furniture design principle and principle inheritance. The methods and purpose are to serve the study of theory and practical application to be constructed to realize traditional furniture modernized. The research process is carried on with the combination of qualitative and quantitative ways. To make the theory to break out is the key point based on cases study and methods demonstration.
