Planning maps are thematic maps to reflect the current, analysis and planning of regional land use. They are significant measures to regulate land use patterns, to plot land parcels, and also can be helpful to other spatial planning. There are problems in the current general land use planning maps. First, contents of planning maps are too similar. Second, there is no specification of cartographic schema for the land use classification for planning. Third, there exist various mapping schemas due to a lack of the universal standard. However, with more sophisticated applications of land use planning in the future it is pressing to keep the diversity regarding to the content of land use plan maps. Meanwhile the rapid development in GIS and spatial analysis technology can provide robust technical support for this purpose. Therefore it is necessary to establish a standard to provide a reliable and efficient land use mapping schema, serving as a common language for sharing geo-spatial information, facilitating map compilation, enhancing information management and ensuring the implementation of land use planning. The dissertation is based on the National Land Resource Investigation program: Techniques and Methods for the Planning Land Use Classification. It examined several municipal general land use planning projects in Changsha of Hunan province, Kunming of Yunnan province, Hefei of Anhui province, Changzhou of Jiangsu province, and Langfang of Hebei province. Changzhou is taken as the study area in this paper to investigate the standardization of general land use planning map schemas, with technical support from GIS. In this dissertation the following aspects are discussed.(1) The content of planning maps is defined. Facilitated application specification techniques and interviews are used here. Levels of detail and focus of maps ought to be understood from the strategic perspective of urban land use master plan. Types of maps should be defined from the perspective of map compiling process.(2) On the macro level the cartographic framework of planning maps ought to be standardized. Mapping tasks, standardization, mathematic and geographic foundation of maps are designed appropriately. In this paper the framework is built in accordance with the maps’ characteristics and their contents.(3) On the micro level the cartographic elements should be standardized in detail. Based on semiotics of maps and theory of map perception, map elements are designed using 5 visual variables:shape, dimension, direction, color, and texture. A symbol library is well designed to facilitate sharing of cartographic elements and the standardization.(4) The derived symbol library is tested in the map compilation of urban land use planning in Changzhou. Taking general land use planning map as an example, content, layers, expression and legends of the map are discussed. The other required maps are also designed. General land use planning maps are standardized mapped. An effective cartographic specification for the municipal general land use planning is established, and it is applied using GIS technology. The result shows that: ﹑lanning maps for whole city area are expressed by zone, such as regional zoning by the dominating function, zoning for regulating the constructive expansion, zoning for land consolidation and improvement, planning maps for central city area are expressed by zoning by the primary land use and zoning for regulating the constructive expansion take county level spatial layout as a reference.②tandardization of mapping indicates the basic feature of land use plan maps, a universal layout design, and a consistent content structure. ③maps in land use planning provide an effective way of land use management control. When compiling these maps we have to emphasize this and differentiate current land use from planned land use. Consequently, the planned land use will have combo symbols, i.e. with both color and symbol, to show current and planned land uses, ④utility classification focuses on the relationship between construction and non-construction land uses. Therefore warm and cool color ramps will be applied to color these 2 different land uses, which will provide as the basis for other color schemes during the map compiling process.
