| Zhu Kezhen (1890-1974), a famous scientist and educator of modern China, as well as a pioneer in the process of localization of the introduced Western science. His rigorous attitude toward academy, modest and prudent personality, and persistence in study, were highly respected by his peers and successors.Lu Yongxiang said:"By mining Zhu Kezhen’s cultural heritage, we will get rich learning from traditional cultural resources." Kezhen introduced foreign advanced scientific thought and philosophy, promoting scientific method and spirit, called on the emphasis on scientific research as well as the construction of subject platform, at the same time; he always took into consideration of the local circumstances in China. Kezhen’s outstanding contribution was closely related to his emphasis on scientific methodology and innovation. It would help people in scientific field in nowadays to promote the ability on scientific innovation to summarize Kezhen’s thoughts and methodology, additionally, his rigorous and scientific attitude, which was demonstrated in his several-decade-long lasting observation, set a good example for scientific research.By reviewing literature research on Kezhen, we identified that the findings till now were fragmented, repetitive and shallow, with lack of a mature and effective research framework, which leading to the lack of fruitful humanistic output. To overcome the shortcomings of the research till now,"Eastward Spread of Western Culture" was set as the main line to build up systematic research framework on Kezhen in this thesis. Firstly, statistical analysis method was adopted to review his work so as to identify Kezhen’s scientific research focuses in his different life stage; Secondly, by in-depth research, we fully demonstrated Kezhen’s achievements and experience in the process of introducing Western scientific thought, educational philosophy and scientific system, which also implying Kezhen’s difficult journey in exploring Chinese science and education development as a scientist, educator and leader; thirdly, by systematically analyzing on Kezhen’s scientific achievement and impact, the Methodology Value was deeply discussed, his far-sighted vision was based on his fully understanding of China’s circumstance as well as the traditional culture, concise sense of modern scientific spirit, the mastery of both Chinese and Western science and culture and the practice of the scientific method; Last but not the least, we tried to reveal the implication carried by Kezhen’s work on modern science and education development, he has made unremitting efforts to make Western science localized in China, he made innovations on the basis of understanding of conditions in China, taking advantage of his multi role, he focused on the content and the system simultaneously, thus made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese local science.In the light of history, we can have learning from our precedents, thus by deep research on Zhu Kezhen, as a typical character in China history of science, we can learn his successful method, academic thoughts and scientific spirit, which can help us understand the road, pattern and characteristics of China’s institutionalized process of science, and the difficult process of the evolution of modern science in China, in addition, we can take it as a precious guidebook for the all-around modernization of our science and technology. |
