The concept 'self-determined innovation', which derived from 'innovation' under Chinese culture background, was put forward when Chinese economic and social development was confronted with great challenges during the transition period. It is not only a concept, but also a transmission of important strategic information. Domestic studies on self-determined innovation exist only for a short time. As complete theoretical framework, studies on self-determined innovation are not yet mature. Therefore, to build a systematic theoretical system of self-determined innovation is key to theoretical and practical circles in return for pushing forward theoretical studies and practices. Previous studies fully explored the theories on endogenous economic growth, entrepreneurial innovation and organizational innovation and made notable progress. On the basis of previous studies, the dissertation explored self-determined innovation theory at micro-level, showed the concept frame and construction model of self-determined innovation, indicated the relationship between the capability of self-determined innovation and performance in the sector of advanced-manufacture, and offered a stable ground for the follow-up theoretical and empirical studies on self-determined innovation.Study 1 focuses on the concept frame of self-determined innovative capability of advanced manufacturing enterprises. In this part, interviews about self-determined innovative capability of advanced manufacturing enterprises were conducted under the background of building the advanced manufacturing industry base in Zhejiang province. First, behavioral event interviews with 46 junior and senior managers were conducted in 30 enterprises which were different in ownership, industry, and scale in order to recognize the traits and typical events of self-determined innovative capability. Second, an analysis was made by encoding interview data. The critical characteristics of self-determined innovation process were summarized. The key dimension and theoretical conception of self-determined innovative capability of manufacturing enterprises were brought forward initially. The result of the research revealed that, under the background of Chinese culture, the self-determined innovative capability of entrepreneurs involved 3 elements: entrepreneurial spirit, innovative strategy and innovative resource, and the capability of organizational self-determined innovation included independent R&D manufacture, self-determined brand strategy and innovative organizational structure.On the basis of study 1, study 2 focused on the relationship between the capability of self-determined innovation and performance with a case study. In this part, typical sample enterprises were chosen to explore the relationship between the capability of self-determined innovation and performance and the theoretical conception of self-determined innovation by the method of multi-case study. The sample enterprises included WanXiang Group (large-sized private enterprise), HangzhouQiLun Group (large-sized state-owned enterprise), HangzhouZhongYa Ltd. (small-medium-sized enterprise). Three cases were analyzed by the method of interviews, data analysis and structure refinement. The result indicated that independent R&D manufacture, self-determined brand strategy and innovative organizational structure are three dimensions of self-determined innovation which have direct effects on enterprise innovative performance. Meanwhile, this case study offered theoretical foundation for future research on self-determined innovative model and the relationship between the capability of self-determined innovation and performance.In Study 3, the questionnaire of enterprise capability of self-determined innovation was designed based on study1, study2 and previous research. 318 manufacturing enterprises, which have their own technologic centers at national or provincial level, were taken as samples to analyze explorative and confirmative factors of the valid questionnaires, exploring and verifying the multi-dimension structural characteristics of the self-determined innovative capability. In addition, the capabilities of self-determined innovation in different ownership, industries and scales were compared. The result indicated that entrepreneurial capability of self-determined innovative 3-demension model composed of entrepreneurial spirit, innovative strategy and innovative resource is more stable than others; enterprise capability of self-determined innovative 4-demension model composed of independent R&D manufacture, self-determined brand strategy and innovative organizational structure is the most stable one. Additionally, both of the two models have acceptable convergent and differentiate validities. Meanwhile, the study showed that entrepreneurial capability of self-determined innovation does not have significant differences in individual, ownership, and industrial factors. Organizational capability of self-determined innovation does not have significant differences in industrial factors. Nevertheless, organizational capability of self-determined innovation has some significant differences in factors of organizational type and scale.In study 4, 219 valid questionnaires were collected and processed to verify the relationship between the capability of self-determined innovation and performance in the sector of advanced-manufacture by the methods of correlation analysis, multi-regression analysis and structural equation model. Meanwhile, the effects of exterior environmental and interior organizational factors on the relationship were also discussed in this part. Based on the analysis, the following results were drawn: 1) from the angle of 3-demension model-based entrepreneurial capability of self-determined innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and innovative resource have significant influence on the enterprise performance; 2) from the angle of 4-demension model-based enterprise capability of self-determined innovation, both independent R&D manufacture and self-determined brand strategy have significant effects on the contextual performance; 3) innovative environment significantly affects the relationship between organizational self-determined innovation and performance; 4) organizational self-determined innovation has a complete mediating effect on the relationship between innovative strategy and innovative performance; 5) organizational self-determined innovation has a partial mediating effect on not only the relationship between innovative strategy and innovative performance but also the relationship between innovative resource and innovative performance; 6) from the relationship between entrepreneurial self-determined innovation and innovative performance, the complete mediating model of organizational self-determined innovation is more effective than the partial mediating model.Finally, the author summed up the main conclusions of the study, discussed the theoretical progress and practical significance, put forward the countermeasures of improving self-determined innovative capability of manufacturing enterprises in macroscopic view, and pointed out the limitations of this study as well as the problems remained to be solved in future.
