The road freight industry is the very important part of logistics industry. The change from road freight to modern logistics is the developing trend of road freight industry. The developing modes which the road freight enterprises choose and the choice principle are the main contents studied in the dissertation. The whole dissertation includes several parts as follows:1. The background, purpose and significance of the study work in the dissertation are shown in detail at first. Then the new researches on developing modes of logistics are specified comprehensively. Consequently the main contents and the route of study works in the dissertation are discussed.2. The theories and methods of the neo-institutional economics are explained in the dissertation. The meanings and significance of institutions are shown in the paper. Then the research objects of the neo-institutional economics are put forward. Consequently some essential concepts of neo-institutional economics are introduced. Some important firm theories of neo-institutional economics, for example, the theories on property rights, transaction costs, and incomplete contacts, etc., are explained in details in the dissertation. And related knowledge on Nash equilibrium and cooperation game in game theory is also introduced.3. Based on the statistical data of America, Japan and Liaoning province in China, the logistics developing modes of road freight industry are dissertated. First, the developing phases of logistics are divided. Then the logistics developing modes in different phases are summarized. And the developing environments of road freight industry are illumined. As a result, the characters of road freight industry developing modern logistics are summarized as follows: the road freight developing multimodal transportation, the change from the common transportation to multifunctional services, the point-to-point freight services in certain area developing the network logistics services, the accessorial activity developing the core capability of productive enterprises and business firms, the dispersed transportation developing the supply chain logistics, the single firm developing the cooperation firms.4. The statistics models in which the institutional environments are dummy variables are set up in order to specify the institutional environments remarkably influenced the development of road freight industry. The theory of institutional changes is utilized to explain that the economical, institutional environments and technical conditions can play important role in the changes of logistics developing modes. Based on the game model and net benefits function, the principle of choosing logistics developing modes is shown. The characters of logistic transaction in different developing modes, for example, the assets specificity, transaction frequency and uncertainty, are analyzed in the dissertation.5. In the light of institutional economic analysis of logistics developing modes, the necessary institutions when the road freight industry develops the modern logistics industry are put forward. First some institutions about the property rights allocation, benefits distribution, management and monitoring unification are designed. And then, the current policies and institutions which restrict logistics development in the institutional environments are analyzed and related methods of improving these institutions are put forward.6. The summaries and expectations of research works are pointed out. The innovations and insufficiencies in research are summarized. The research directions in future are illuminated.On the base of study contents in the dissertation, several innovations in research include as follows:1. The logistics developing modes of road freight industry based on the logistics developing phases of road freight industry are specified comprehensively. The 28 kinds of developing modes are summarized.2. Based on the statistical data of Liaoning province, the institutional environments, as dummy variables, are introduced into the statistics models. The models shows the institutional environments in different developing phase of road freight industry are remarkable difference. The changes of institutional environments influenced the development of road freight industry. The institutions in market economy system accelerate the road freight industry developing.3. The model of institutional changes is utilized to analyze the role of the economical, institutional environments and technical conditions in the changes of logistics developing modes. The changes of logistics developing environments induce the changes of scale economies, externalities, risks and transaction costs. Consequently the increase of benefits induced by the changes cannot be obtained unless logistics developing modes are innovated.4. The choice model of developing modes, in which the transaction costs are introduced, is set up to analyze the logistics developing modes. The model shows if the whole benefits of logistics transaction and technical conditions are not changed, the transaction costs are the key factors influencing the choice of logistics developing modes.5. Based on transaction costs, the assets specificities, transaction frequencies, and the uncertainties of logistics transaction are specified in detail in the different logistics developing modes. The effects of structure of property rights inside the road freight firms and the institutional environments outside these firms on the logistics transaction costs are analyzed.6. In the light of institutional analysis of logistics developing modes, the institutions of allocating the property rights, distributing benefits, unifying management and monitoring are designed to economize the logistics transaction costs. At same time the methods of improving the institutional environments are put forward.
