Knowledge intensive services has become a new economic growth point andpenetrated into the economic and social fields, relating to the development of acountry or region's economy and its international competitiveness, and promoting theprogress of the whole society. But at the same time, we can't help thinking Chinaeconomically most developed city, Shanghai. What's the development level of theknowledge intensive services at present? Compared with New York, what is the gapand advantage between them?Next, we tried to learn about more interesting questions. Why do these knowledgeintensive services spontaneously gather in the international metropolis? Whether theseknowledge intensive services are concentrated in big cities in China? If so, what arereasons? Furthermore, how these knowledge intensive services layout in internal city?In the dissertation we attempt to answer those questions by analyzing thedevelopment and layout of the knowledge intensive services against a background ofglobalization and information society. Therefore, the dissertation mainly focused ontwo major themes: one is the development of the knowledge intensive servicesindustry in Shanghai City; the other is the location of those knowledge intensiveservices. The dissertation is divided into eleven chapters. The first chapter is introduction;the second and third chapters define and describe the characteristics and the scope ofthe knowledge intensive services on the basis of the relevant literature review.Chapter 4-7 primarily study on the development of knowledge-service inShanghai. Firstly, we rank the knowledge intensive services in China by usingprincipal component analysis method; next, according to the Shanghai MunicipalStatistical Yearbook and the first Shanghai economic census data, we analyze thedevelopment of knowledge intensive services. Then, we analyze the New York City industry on the basis of North AmericanIndustry Classification System by using a lot of the United States Bureau of Statistics, and draw the conclusion that the number of employment, total income, or per capitaincome of these industries such as health care, finance and insurance, information, professional, scientific and technical services, whether from relative value or absolutevalue, ranks the forefront and maintains a steady upward trend compared with otherindustries. Finally, compared with the New York City service knowledge on the whole, wefind that there is still a very big gap in knowledge services between New York and Shanghai. Combined with the distance between New York and Shanghai, thebenchmark of leading industries and Shanghai's comparative advantages, healthservices industry in Shanghai City should be chosen as the leading industries.Chapter 8-9 analyze the location and influential factor of knowledge intensiveservices. Using linear regression method, we find that the regional economicdevelopment level, the knowledge environment for innovation and human capitalservices remarkably positively affects the location of knowledge intensive services. As to the distribution study of the knowledge intensive services, they are dividedinto three categories in order to discuss conveniently. The conclusion is that thelocation of knowledge intensive services as a whole is agglomeration, but alsoaffecting by the size of the market and attribute of each sector. Some services arescattered in cities, but they are also concentrated in urban areas, and there is nophenomenon that large-scale knowledge intensive services spread to the outskirts. Finally, Chapter 10 put forward some suggestions about the development ofShanghai's knowledge intensive services and Chapter 11 conclude the wholedissertation. There are four innovation in the dissertation, including construction of indicatorsystem, research methods, the use of data and theoretical research. In terms of construction of indicator,we set up evaluation systemof knowledgeservice development and statistical indicator system of knowledge intensive service. In terms of method, we rank knowledge intensive services by use principalcomponent analysis for knowledge services; secondly, we use regression method toanalyze major factors affecting knowledge services; finally, we use location quotientto analyze the distribution. In terms of data, we use the latest version of the first national economic censusdata and Shanghai National census data. Meanwhile, we also use the data from theUnited States Bureau of Statistics. These data provide a solidity basis for supportingour conclusion. In theory, it is innovative to study main influencing factors about the location ofknowledge intensive services, because previous research mainly focus on thetransportation costs in manufacturing industries, while as for knowledge intensiveservices, transportation costs are almost zero; Second, we find that informationtechnology does not make those industries more decentralized, on the contrary, it is asupplement to the face-to-face exchanges. Finally, from practical sense, it is rare to analyze the development and the spatial distribution of the knowledge intensive services about a certain city at home andabroad.
