Studies On The International Competitiveness Of Chinese Shipbuilding Enterprises

In order for China to attain the goal of building itself into the world's No.1 shipbuilding nation, it is of prime importance to Chinese shipbuilding enterprises to improve and maintain their international competitiveness. The present paper is an attempt at the studies on the international competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises. For a scientific and comprehensive treatment of the subject, following the logical line from general to specific, it starts from literature studies, proceeds to carry out theoretical studies, and then continues to carry out field studies, under the guidance of the theoretical studies. The research methods and framework are as follows: first, a review and summary are given of the studies conducted in the past and at present on the international competitiveness of shipbuilding enterprises, and on the two related subjects of international competitiveness and international competitiveness of enterprises. These serve as the basis for the theoretical studies that follow. Second, based on the studies and criticism of theories of comparative and of competitive advantages in international trade, the paper first proposes the theoretical model for the international competitiveness of an enterprise in general and then of a shipbuilding enterprise in particular. Third, based on the proceeding studies, field studies are carried out systematically on the influential factors and level of development of international competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises. At last, development strategies are proposed for the improvement of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises.The present paper expands on the above points in following aspects:Firstly, it gives as the background information a brief description of the international and domestic shipbuilding enterprises on the world shipbuilding landscape. It also explains the practical and theoretical values, and the research methods and framework of the studies on the international competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises, including innovative points in this paper. Through systematic literature studies, an overview is given of the researches that have been carried out at home and abroad on the three related subjects of international competitiveness, international competitiveness of enterprises, and international competitiveness of shipbuilding enterprises.Secondly, making wide reference of western economics theories, especially theories of international business and theories of competitive advantages, it gives a comprehensive review and analyses of the theories of static and dynamic comparative advantage and competitive advantage in international trade. It provides an overview of the theoretical bases for the studies on the international competitiveness of shipbuilding enterprises.Thirdly, it then carries out the theoretical studies on international competitiveness of an enterprise in general and of a shipbuilding enterprise in particular. It first proposes the general definition, major influential factors and different forms of the international competitiveness of an enterprise, establishing the theoretical and assessment models. Proceeding from general to specific, incorporating the techno-economic characteristics of a shipbuilding enterprise, it then examines the major influential factors of the international competitiveness of a shipbuilding enterprise, also establishing the theoretical and assessment models.Fourthly, based on the proceeding theoretical studies,quantitative analyses are first carried out on the international competitiveness of the main shipbuilding enterprises of major shipbuilding nations, and an order list of them is made and explanation provided. Through international comparisons, systematic and comprehensive field researches are then carried out and an overview provided for the three major factors of the international competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises.Finally, based on the field studies, development strategies are proposed for the improvement of the international competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises, aimed at their restricting factors.
