With the rapid advances in science and technology in modern era, innovation has become the intrinsic driving force and crucial determinant for regional economy development during the course of rapid transition from the industrial society to the knowledge society. The innovative city, product of knowledge-intensive development of urban areas, comes to be a brand new conceptualization and mode for urban development. It is an extremely tough task to complete such a systematic socio-economic complex, which must be carried out under effective direction with solid theoretical ground. As the Chinese practice of building innovative city goes further, it becomes more and more urgent to construct a theoretical framework and to find a strategy out for innovative city in the context of Chinese transformation. That is what this dissertation targets to resolve.Based on a thorough survey of the relevant research and empirical analysis in and abroad, this dissertation presents a systematic theoretical research and puts forward a three-dimension framework for innovative city by incorporating multiple methods, like transdisciplinary research approaches, systems analysis and quantitative analysis, and so on. Firstly, it presents basic framework about the concept, features, models and evolving patterns for innovative city. Secondly, it resolves the theoretical framework for its concept and features mainly from the perspective of systems analysis as well as employing game theories. Thirdly, it constructs an overall evaluation index system by adopting a group of socioeconomic components with commonality and suitability comparable for the development stages of innovative cities in China. Therefore, the major contribution of this dissertation lies in not only its creatively introduction about the conceptual model and evolving paths for innovative city, but also its systematic methods to analyze and evaluate the innovative city, with an evaluation index system.The dissertation is characterized by an organic integration of theoretical thoughts and empirical analysis. Applying the aforementioned framework, this dissertation carries out a case study on Tianjin, which aims to be an innovative city.
