Manufacturing Execution System links plan management and workshop control in an enterprise, which is an integrative management and control system of workshop production oriented to manufacturing process. Traditional MES software causes great development difficulty, long developing period, high cost, low reliability as well as bad re-structuring and integration ability. In view of all defects, the paper puts forward a developing mode of MES software based on component and driven by ontology, and makes a study on the key technologies.Firstly the paper presents the history, state-of-the-art and future trends of MES, analyzes the problems in traditional MES development. Then a component-based and ontology-driven mode is put forward to develop MES software.The paper investigates ontology engineering, including sorts, construction methods and description languages of ontology. OWL is analyzed and an ontology development method suitable to MES domain is put forward. According to hierarchical and multi-view ontology model of MES domain, the ontology of MES is constructed and described with OWL.The paper studies on ontology-driven MES domain engineering after constructing MES ontology. Based on the analysis and comparision of various domain analysis methods, the paper brings forward a method of ontology-based domain analysis in MES. Guided and driven by MES ontology, MES domain is analyzed and modeled with UML.Based on the analysis of MES domain, the paper establishs a hierarchical MES architecture based on component and driven by ontology. Analysis and design of components based on ontology are made to obtain detail components of MES domain.The paper investigates MES application engineering driven by ontology. Based on the analysis and comparision of various description methods of components, the paper puts forward a description method of components based on ontology and facet, meanwhile a component library management system is established, then retrieval methods of MES components based on facet and ontology as well as composition and deployment of MES components are investigated.Finally, the paper analyzes the informationalization requirement of Chinese herbal medicine enterprise, difference between process industries and discrete industries as well as characteristics of Chinese herbal medicine production and MES of process industries. A prototype of pharmaceutical MES based on component and driven by ontology is developed to verify the feasibility of the development mode.
