The research of the evaluation of operational effectiveness is a key sector for military and industry under the virtual acquisition background. During the weapon systems development process, there are many design artifacts which have abundance and complete information for further exploration. If these artifacts can be made full use of to construct simulation models and develop simulation applications, the conclusions of evaluation may be more credible, available and reliable. However, as the follow three aspects, there are some problems about the key technologies and theoretical of the field that hinders the advancement of the evaluation. Which incarnate three aspects: Firstly, how to take out simulation executive semantics from the design artifacts to implement the transformation of systems function, capability and behavior; secondly, how to feedback the evaluation results into design process to support the test of weapon system products; thirdly, how to improvement the consistency of simulation model specification and data source expression to enhance the composability of modeling and simulation resource. These problems can be concluded as the theoretical problem of design artifacts driven simulation. The start point of solving this problem is to build the standard specification of the weapon systems design, simulation and evaluation information. The integrated Architecture Framework (AF) of system of systems engineering (SOS) is a reasonable solution .Because its description has the advantage of comprehensiveness and consistency; it can become the ligament of design and evaluation specification.Architecture can be defined as the structure of weapon systems components, their relationships, and the principles and guidelines governing their development and evolution over time. As a part of weapon system architecture technology research project, this dissertation focuses on architecture based simulation products development and analysis methods and tools for the evaluation of operational effectiveness. The innovations of this dissertation include the following five parts:(1) The meaning of Architecture Driven Simulation(ADS) is that using AF express design artifacts and through exactly abstracting methods to describe the systems syntax and semantics ,and then transforming them into simulation model in order to run simulation experiments to gain high credible evaluation results. This dissertation presents the methodologies of ADS which include reference process model, formalization methods and executable architecture theory. The framework would provide effective way for weapon systems full life of acquisition of design and evaluation process mutually supporting.(2) Currently DoDAF is an advanced framework for architecture description, but its main product can't directly support the weapon systems simulation and evaluation. This dissertation extends the DoDAF with two architecture products OV-8 and OV-9, defined the weapon systems simulation aspects information such as structure, function, behavior and interface. The newly architecture products attain the design semantics without any losing and preserve the architecture views consistency.(3) Aiming at the problem of executable architecture, this dissertation proposes ABN paradigm. The ABN paradigm is a meta-modeling specification based on hyper-graph and abstracts the architecture behavior modeling elements and behavior execution operator. The ABN can be used to assess the logic and behavior of weapon systems architecture. It provides theoretical foundation for the architecture behavior models transforming to simulation models.(4) In order to acquire high credible evaluation conclusion, this dissertation presents mapping arithmetic from architecture behavior models and core data models transforming to executable simulation models. The architecture data model based on CADM specification and the simulation data model specification would provide for data exchange among design and evaluation process.(5) Based on the research background on the evaluation of missile operation effectiveness, the architecture driven simulation development tool is designed and implemented. This dissertation presents the prototype software toolkit which is called ADSim. ADSim implements the architecture modeling framework and the mapping to simulation arithmetic, and the classic evaluation methods have integrated to the toolkit to promote the efficiency. As a demonstration, the strategic missile weapon system attack and defense simulation application is studied in the paper. The running procedure of the toolkit is also illustrated. In this dissertation the principle and key technology of architecture driven simulation is further studied. These theories can enrich the methodology of weapon and equipment demonstration systems engineering and systems simulation methodology. It would provide theoretical and tool support for the evaluation of operational effectiveness, and promote the virtual acquisition practice.
