By applying related theories and methodologies of cultural communications, history science, sociology and economics, the articled tried to recapitulate the development process of private publishing businesses in modern time China for the first time, through the study of two largest private publishing houses of the time, Chong Hwa Book Corporation.The article looked at the three main traditional models of publishing and their transformation in modern times, to examine their relationship of inheritance; by checking the historical records of westerners' publication in China (mostly about church activities), it enlightened what has been learned from the western model, and its impact on the industry; through the analysis of the internal operations, management style, selection of theme topics, and competition situation, as well as the overall social environment, it re-lived the actual life of the private publishing businesses then. Above all, the cultural pursuit and its standing as grass-root voice of the practitioners, the moral value, extensive knowledge and commercial ethics, especially as found in the group of people including Zhang Yuanji, Wang Yunwu and Lu Feikui, etc., who has contributed to the rise of the industry and brought fame to themselves.In a time when the publishing business in China is progressing as an industry, it's quite necessary and essential to look back on what history can teach us.
