The projection display system includes an illumination system and an image system. As an important component of the projection display system, the illumination system determines the quality of the image on screen, including the brightness and uniformity. So this dissertation focuses on the design principle and the simulation analysis of the illumination system for LCOS micro-projection system. The research work includes:1) Three projection display systems which adopt diffident micro-display panels are introduced with the optical structure and the principle. In addition, several other projection display technologies are presented. Then the design principle of the illumination system which is based on the non-imaging optics is presented in detail. And several optical device models are simulated and analyzed in software to mast their special property.2) This dissertation firstly proposes the design of the special parabolic retro-reflector for the light recycling process of UHP light source. Compared with spherical retro-reflector for same goal, the special parabolic retro-reflector can improve the energy collection efficiency with 6%.The result is benefit to improve the energy efficiency of UHP micro projection display system.3) In order to collect the extent light form LED, this dissertation firstly proposes the optimal design of TIR lens based the combination of ray tracing and structure optimizing, and having the energy efficiency and the uniformity as the evaluate function. The simulation result shows the collection efficiency of TIR lens model is 67% when the angle of light is confined within 15° . And the uniformity on observation screen is improved in some degree. The optimal design of TIR lens further provides the development space of LED micro-projection display system.4) On the base of the theory research and the model simulation, four projection display systems which have LCOS as micro-display panel and which combine different optical devise for UHP and LED light source respectively are proposed in this dissertation. And the quality of projection display system is evaluated by thesimulation outcome.Finally, the conclusion of the study in this dissertation is drawn and the further research direction is made.
