Theory, experiment and computational science are three pillars of scientific research. As a main means of scientific research, scientific visualization has had an important impact upon scientific research. Today driven by novel web technology such as semantic web, web services and grid, scientific visualization will play more important role on scientific research.This dissertation research contents includes point-based surface editing , image quantization and segmentation of thermal paint, 3D visualization system model of MCNP, semantic web scientific visualization etc visualization techniques. The dissertation main contents is as follows:(1) The developments and actualities of scientific visualization tools and algorithms are all-around discussed. The techniques styles and trends of scientific visualization tools, surface rendering and color image segmentation.(2) A deep research on point-sampled 3D surface rendering and editing is made. In order to improve the efficiency of point- sampled 3D surface rendering and editing, the integration of scalar-field free-form deformation (SFFD) and implicit surface functions is explored. A 3D surface editing tool is developed, it includes smoothing, tapering, deforming, and Boolean operations.(3) The methods of thermal paint image quantization and segmentation is researched.
