Lead iodide (PbI2) crystal is one of the most promising room nuclear radiation detector materials. It can be used for detecting γ-ray and α-ray of 1KeV-1MeV, and can be used on making large area X-ray imaging array. PbI2 crystal has a wide band gap, high room temperature resistivity, large atomic numbers and mobility life product of carriers. So, PbI2 detector has high energy resolution and good detecting efficiency. In comparison with others, PbI2 detector can be used and kept on a larger temperature range of —200℃~130℃. Therefore, PbI2 crystal has been more and more attractive lately.Presently, there are not many oversea reports about PbI2, which focuses mostly on PbI2 crystal growth and tentative fabrication of detector. Whereas, PbI2 polycrystal synthesis and crystal growth habit have not been studied deeply by them. So, the as grown crystal and the detector fabricated from which are not satisfactory. In our country, there hasn't correlative reports published. The aim of this paper is to research deeply on the method of polycrystal synthesis and crystal growth, to explore a new craft of PbI2 single crystal growth with high quality, and to get large size PbI2 single crystal with good integrality to lay a foundation for study on detector fabrication.
