With the people's increasing demand on advanced wireless communication technology, 3G mobile communication system, which has not yet been in commercial popularization completely, can not reach the requirement of users. Thus more and more people start to focus their researching on the next generation mobile communication technology, B3G (beyond 3G) or 4G. From the technique point of view, higher data transmission rate, larger system capacity and better communication QoS are the key objects to be break through. Multi-antenna system, such as smart antenna and MIMO is well-known as the best choice to meet above targets.Beamforming comes from smart antenna with strengthening desired signal and suppressing inter-users interference as its typical technical superiority. It is also the base to realize SDMA (Space Division Multiple Access). STBC (Space Time Block Code) is the main method to realize MIMO diversity, and it is good at mitigating the influence of wireless multipath fading. In view of development trend, the combination of beamforming and STBC will adequately exert the advantage of multi-antenna system and result in enhancing the system performance significantly. The nowadays research mostly focus on the combination scheme in scenario of point to point, combination method on multi-user scenario is not adequately mentioned.In this paper, the rationale for STBC and beamforming techniques is firstly described, mainly focusing on the orthogonal STBC and transmit beamforming, which are the foundation of the following combination scheme. We also make extension the conception of beamforming, including the traditional beamforming in smart antenna system and the generalized beamforming in MIMO wireless system.Spatial-temporal channel model is the requisite tools for multi-antenna system researching.
