With increasing requirements of communication services, communication networks show attractive application prospects in many fields. It has become the neural network of the modern society, and the basic strategic establishment affecting development of society and economic. Transport network, core part of communication network, plays a critical role in the architecture. And with the wide using of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in optical transport network, transport network and service layer networks become more tightly coupled. In order to meet with higher and higher demands of communication quality, decrease impacts and losses incurred by failures, provide services safely, reliably and efficiently, reliability of communication networks has become an important research topic.This dissertation summarizes researches having been conducted about reliability of communication network and transport network, and introduces research trends of reliability. Existing researches mainly have five problems:(1) Existing approaches do not capture the instantaneous network conditions, which is very important to carriers and customers. These research approaches can be classified into two categories. Firstly, under conditions of stochastic or contrived component failures, using graph and probability theories, to analyze the probability of the network or a part of the network being in the operating status at any time in the future. Secondly, based on statistical analysis of history operation data, to assess history reliability at any time in the past. However, none of these approaches has well studied instantaneous statuses.(2) There is a lack of comprehensive and integrated reliability metric.
