With the rapid development of interconnected networks and Internet applications, there are more and more problems brought up in network systems. The most urgent one of these problems is the network congestion due to heavy network traffic. Serverices provided by the Internet become more and more complexly, which requires the SPs to control the network traffic more intelligent. There are still many problems to solve in order to capture the dynamic charactaritics of the Internet. This paper begins with the research on network traffic charactaritics because which can fully reflect the interaction with the network. Then the key technologies of network traffic control are discussed in details.This paper adopts the science methodology in Internet traffic engineering to explore the Internet performance. We try to analysis the relationship between the TCP congestion control mechanism and the self-similar of the network traffic. And then the different relationship between propagation delay, loss rate with the degree of self-similar of the network traffic. The research on the reason of the self-similar of network traffic should serve for the network traffic control. The network traffic control is the most direct approach to promote the network performance. This paper first focuses on the modeling of the network traffic control. Then the traffic controller is designed based on the model. And the model predictive control mechanism is used to design more efficient traffic controller. The network traffic control should also include the design of the control plane of next generation networks.Then we discuss the key technologies of the control plane of ASON (Automatic Switched Optical Networks).The main contributions of this paper included:Firstly, the network traffic charactaritics are analyzed with the wavelet technology, the reasons of the self-similar of the network traffic are discussed in details. Then the relationship between TCP congestion control mechanism and the self-similar of network traffic is researched in theory.
